Renting Hand Held Devices In Flight

I was recently caught on a 5 hour flight with a dead ipad. It got me thinking would it be possible to rent kindles on the flight that are pre loaded with let's say spotify, netflix and a few magazines. Has this been tried before? Thoughts?

Very hard to do, and at the current cost of devices, wouldn't portable power packs make more sense than making FA's deal with renting out devices?

That said, this is not new - some airlines without their own IFE (like Alaska) rent out Digiplayer. AA hands out Samsung tablets in premium cabins. Bottom line, I'd recommend scoping out some of the threads we have here on portable power packs.

Or carry a second device -- secondhand iPads, iPhones, etc. are very inexpensive. I have a couple of old iPhones in my carryon which I use solely as iPods. It's just like having an iPod touch, with a decent battery for once rather than the anemic thing Apple puts into the iPod touches.

Thanks! Will check out portable power packs.

Really, the next step needs to be airlines switching out IFE for in-flight power available at every seat. If BYOD/media streaming over wi-fi is the new trend, power has to be available for it to work, especially on longer flights. We'll get there eventually.

Jetstar in Australia have been doing this for a few years on some flights.

I try extremely hard not to fly Jetstar so I've never had the opportunity to try it out...
