PDF editing program?

Does anyone know of a decent free PDF editing program for Windows? I just need something reasonably functional for rare edits. I've googled and never seen anything that looks good, so thought I'd ask you guys.

Thanks!

What kind of edits? Page extraction? Typing information in blank fields (like in a form)? Changing text that's already there?

The only free app I know that does any of these is Foxit Reader, which I think has a typewriter function to let you fill out forms. Otherwise, you're gonna pay. :) Foxit and CutePDF are both reasonably priced and solid choices.

Changing text. I use CutePDF for creation when needed, e.g., from a webpage, and it works great.

I got a copy of nitro Professional (older version). I picked it up (unopened) at my usual hangout, the thrift store. $3.00

Does what I want - edit files, extract pages, convert to Word (not too well).

I think you can download slightly older versions for free to see if you like it. Google is your friend.

ETA: What I mean by 'older versions' is versions just before the present one. I think the current version is 8, so 6 and 7 seem to be downloadable.

I have PDFpenPro but it's for Mac users. I did a search for something comparable for windows and this is what came up: http://alternativeto.net/software/pd...atform=windows

Hope this helps.

Any recent edition (which can be had for cheap on eBay) of WordPerfect will open and edit pdf files.

Really?

I wasn't aware of that. Thanks.

Well, to be honest, I wasn't really aware that WordPerfect was still around.

So much better program that Word in so many ways.

But that's for another thread, and I am aware that investing long-term hopes in WP would be like signing up for a typewriter repair course....

As will Microsoft Office. Just right click and under "open with", select Word.

As with anything non-PDF native (including Word Perfect), the actual file may not always look the same, depending on the layout and how it was originally turned into PDF.

Thanks everyone. I figured out an adequate solution, based on researching the Wordperfect suggestion.

I have OpenOffice on this machine, which I installed as a temporary bridge till I could get home to my MS Office discs to install that.

It turns out you can edit PDFs within the Draw program of OpenOffice if you install an extension to import the PDFs called Oracle PDF Import Extension which you can download here:

http://extensions.openoffice.org/

Draw seems to edit the PDFs about as well as NitroPDF, and is sufficient for my purposes.

I'll see if I can find any free NitroPDF downloads - I have that on my home machine, and it works OK. (Got a free password some time in the past when they offered that as a promotion.)

I knew you guys would lead me to the solution!

Maybe your version does. Mine (Office 2000 and Office 2003) doesn't know from .pdf files. It has the nitro toolbar attached, so I can convert to pdf, but can't read them.

Check [deleted] for Version 8 and earlier. Version 9 is the latest version.

I removed the link. I hadn't actually used the site but there are many others out there to get the stuff from.

Sorry about the problems, Doc. :(
