Experiences with replacing landlines with OBiTALK

Was reading this and came across an alternative for landlines:

http://blogs.computerworld.com/mobil...6v%3D133247963

Lots of good reviews on amazon as well:

I am curious if there is anyone here who replaced their landline with OBiTALK and if so was it good. Especially curious as I tried to set my phone to call through my google voice # and it does not seem smooth.

pretty sure google is not the only option

IIRC there is some discussion on FT, perhaps some here >

IIRC the hardware for routing phone is PBX

Got it 2+ years ago. Works perfectly with Google Voice. Wish I could dump ComEd and NiGas as easily as ATT et al.

Which one do you have ? The OBi 100 or OBi 110?

And what internet speed do you have?

Does anyone think google will stop the free service at some time? This will be useless then right?

Thanks that thread was difficult for me to understand. Can you explain how google is not the only option?

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 7_0_3 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/537.51.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0 Mobile/11B511 Safari/9537.53)

I've had OBi for over a year and love it. Cancelled my landline shortly after. I work from home and rely heavily upon my phone connection and have no issues. I did enable qos settings in my router to ensure VoIP traffic has priority and all has been well. Also, I have 100mbs down and 10mps up (we stream everything, no cable).

I actually have two units, one at my home in the US and the other at my in laws place in Romania. With the unit in Romania, my in laws can call us anytime on any US based number. I also use it for conference calls when working from RO servicing my US based clients. Likewise, we can call them as if they were in the states. Works like a charm and I consider it to have been a solid purchase. I will say though, I router with qos can make the audio far cleaner. I would not go OBi without one.

Cheers

I have installed Obi on my house & relatives. IMHO Obi100 is enough if all you need is to replace landline. I didn't setup QOS, never heard any complain.

What's qos? I'm finding it hard to believe that something free could be this good.

Qos = quality of service. Not mandatory, but helpful if you have several devices pulling bandwidth. Qos is a setting within router operating systems (most modern routers have it) which allows you to set the priority of data flow across the network. Essentially, you can "tell" the router to give priority to VoIP calls first, pc's second, and gaming devices third. If your home is not full of bandwidth intensive devices, you can skip this. For me, again, I stream everything and the phone must be set as priority within qos to ensure a consistently solid connection.

Keep in mind. Google voice is free today, this can change...

Is there any other service similar to GV?

There are quite a few SIP providers out there, free and paid. I've only used gvoice.

FYI...

ObiTalk will no longer be able to support Google Voice after May 15, 2014. Google is shutting off XMPP support, which is what Obi uses to integrate Google Voice into their product.
