Blocks of data?

I've searched for an answer to my question but maybe I don't know what exactly I'm searching for. I'm wondering if there is a service in the US where I can buy a SIM and a block of data and then use up that data over time instead of the data expiring by the end of the month or paying every month. I have a Nexus 7 with 3/4g and would like to occasionally be able to use a data connection when I don't have access to WiFi.

Am I right to think that this just doesn't exist here in the US? Thanks for any information.

There is yourkarma which does a wifi hotspot that lets you buy blocks of data, but they don't do SIM cards for devices like that.

You might not know, but I think you are talking about the right thing!

I can't say for the US as I am in the UK, but here I have a sim for my iPad. It is supplied by 3 (a mobile phone company) works on 3G and has 3GB of data and is valid for three months from first use. They do cards for one month and twelve months too and this one suits me best. You can use it at whatever rate suits you. As you are seeking, I use it when I am not using free hotel wifi etc.

You probably need to check the prepaid sim thread for the USA for more details.

The closest service that I know of is Internet on the Go. It is not SIM card, but a MiFi device that runs on Sprint's CDMA network. The rate is $45 for 3GB, $25 for 1.5GB or $10 for 0.5GB that has no expiration. There is another fee schedule for data that expire in 30 days.

It is available only through Wal Mart. The MiFi costs $80.

I recall using something similar when I was recently in London which is what got me thinking about something for the US. I did look in that thread but it's so huge it's hard to find something specific.

I will look into this. Not exactly what I hoped for but may be a viable solution. Thanks for the information!
