Time will tell whether it is a flawed design, or not. Until then, I'll reserve judgment.

I hope for the best - but Apple has a pretty dismal track record when it comes to desktop computer designs. For every hit (and they have had several), they have some that are complete and utter failures.

If you read the release notes carefully, you'll realize that there is a major functional reason for the design, which has NOTHING to do with being an "overly stylish" form factor.

So I've got nothing against the mac pro, but nothing really for it either. It's one of those things that I just have any reason at all to get but can appreciate that they're going to make. So don't take this as a criticism of the machine itself.

But they're just building a cooling chimney. It could just as easily have been a G4 cube and you'd get the same effect. It could have been done in a smaller version of the old pro case. The "overly stylish" form factor was 100% aesthetic decision. There is no practical reason why it needed to be circular and, actually, there is no reason at all linking a cooling chimney to that particular shape.

I'll leave the analysis of the machine to people who are more likely than me to buy it (e.g. everyone) but I just felt it necessary to point out that the circle design was entirely aesthetic.

Hmm, I have to be honest, nice looking wasn't really my first thought. The first picture I saw of it my first reaction was along the lines of "why would anyone make a computer look like a trash can?" Now that I've seen a few more shots, I'd change trash can to ash tray.

On that note, here are some fun mockups (pun intended):

Hilarious mockups of Apple's new Mac Pro

Personally, I'm waiting for the dim sum version :p

I'm bummed there was no MacBook Pro announcement today. :(

Me too, but if I would bet money, it will be October and that is only four months from now.

I was looking at the MacBook wikipedia page since it quickly shows all the previous release dates. It has been a long time since they have refreshed the MacBook Pro line compared to previous releases and they often refresh in October. I'm guessing they only had so many Haswell chips, so decided to do the Air now.

While mine is 4 years old now and I really would like a new machine, I can hold on for four more months to see if they upgrade at that point.
