From Dubai Stu: I saw this article on DSL Reports and am passing it on without recourse. It sounds like a great solution, but I have not done any independent research: https://www.dslreports.com/shownews/R...-75Mbps-126377

From joejones: See this thread -- Prepaid SIM discussion (consolidated) in the Japan forum

From msp3: If you're a Sprint customer, data roaming is completely free on SoftBank (Sprint's parent company), for a $5 add-on you get unlimited voice: http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...a-sms-in-Japan

Depends on how much data you will use and what 4G speed means to you.

Docomo is the only one which advertises unthrottled data speeds
https://docomo.prepaid-sim.jp/lp/index.html

The other MVNO prepaid sims will offer more GB for less money but throttle the data in different ways. OCN, So-net, and IIJ speed tests seem to be faster than B-Mobile but also a bit more expensive.

Well actually I don't need full 4g all the time. 3g will be fine for email/google maps. I looked at the Docomo link and it's 500mb for 1700 yen - that's quite expensive what are the other cheaper (albeit slower) competitors I should consider?

500MB is ¥700 on the DoCoMo page

IIJ - happy customer

I bought the "Japan Travel" 3GB prepaid SIM at Narita (from the little food shop in Terminal 2 arrivals). It gives you 30 days to use it, and doesn't give any warnings about throttling after a certain daily usage.

I used it all up over the course of about 12 days - so obviously was using a lot on certain days (usually when I had long train journeys). I was really pleased with coverage (from IIJ) around Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, a few places in between, and on some really long train journeys. I also had no problems using it as a personal hotspot for me laptop.

I would definitely buy it again.

I will be in Tokyo next week for 6 days, so can anyone advise whether it will be cheaper to rent a mobile wifi device rather than buy a prepaid SIM card. Also, do Japanese prepaid SIM cards allow the phone to be used as a wifi hotspot? Thanks.

Cross-posting this because there are two different forums/discussions about prepaid SIMs in Japan:

For those who are visiting Japan via other countries, there are some options to bypass the high cost of Japanese SIM cards, the low data amounts, and the clunky profiles or custom settings some of the cards need. If you are stopping in Hong Kong, mainland China or Singapore (there might be other country options as well) prior to visiting Japan, you can buy a regional (all of Asia) or two-country SIM that will often offer either unlimited or a larger amount of data at a great price.

For example, I stopped in Hong Kong for a few days before arriving in Japan and bought a China Mobile 7 day unlimited Japan data SIM that runs on CMHK LTE in HK and Softbank LTE in Japan - US$24 and no special profiles, APN changes, etc - just reboot the phone on arrival in Japan and make sure data roaming is enabled and you're good to go. I didn't ask if the cards were activated at purchase, or when used in the phone, but if it's the latter, you could buy a few of these to stock up for future trips to Japan. They also may be available to order online.

Thanks. How much did you pay for the card and how much data was provided?

@bensim - There's no set MSRP for the IIJMio Travel sim. They have a new version, fully mvno, for 1.5/3GB https://tr.iijmio.jp/ I'd advise picking it up at a Bic Camera before 8 pm (when the sim counter tends to close)
1.5GB https://www.biccamera.com.e.lj.hp.tr.../item/4729701/ ~ 2,000 JPY
3GB https://www.biccamera.com.e.lj.hp.tr.../item/4729702/ ~ 3,000 JPY

+ Don't pre-order for pick-up at BICQLO in Shinjuku. That location's tax-free (English BIC website) counter usually has an extremely long check-out line and sim's are consumable for use within Japan, therefore not tax-free anyhow.

Used B-Mobile and So-Net side-by-side recently with identical hardware, essentially same speeds. Sometimes B-mobile marginally faster, but it does seem to have a slight lag at times.

Every tourist SIM in Japan I have used allows tethering.... BIC, IIJIMIO, B-Mobile, So-Net and some others undesirable ones.

Any recent updates on SIM cards? Looking at going in May 2020.

Is the best and or easiest way to have an unlocked phone and buy the SIM from the airport?

I'm currently looking for a sim for 1-2 months. I would like unlimited data at reasonable speeds. T-Mobile roaming from the U.S. is a total joke.

Any suggestions? Price?

Does someone in your family have a MyNumber/residence id (as Japan's currently restricted entry & tightened restrictions around omicron)? You might want to get a domestic MVNO data only sim and I remember seeing a few PAYG 1 month trial sims for these companies at Amazon.co.jp, BIC, & Yodobashi online. Actually, even sms might come in handy as I recall some restaurant wait list kiosks had an option to input phone number to text when table is ready. Guessing sms could come in handy for food delivery, too, if app validation requires it.
https://kakaku.com/mobile_data/sim/r...p?si_option7=1

I'd otherwise suggest a hotspot rental or domestic sim rental since most international travel eSims/sims will be roaming https://www.ivideo.com.tw/english/japanwifirental
