Anyone ditched their regular ipad for the mini?

When I got the 1st gen ipad I was in love from day one. I have a 3rd gen ipad as well now and am still in love with the thing. However, I am contemplating either getting a 4th gen 128GB ipad or a 64GB mini to replace what I currently have.

Has anyone ditched the regular ipad for the mini?

I do like portabillity but find the iphone screen a tad bit small for getting anything decent done.

After using the iPad 3 since it came out there's no way I could go back to the low-resolution screen of the iPad mini. There's a huge difference between the two when looking at text. That's the single biggest reason making me hold off on buying an iPad mini at the moment - otherwise I would definitely switch.

Once they bring out a version with a comparable screen I think it will be an easy decision.

I have a 4th gen 64GB and seeing as I spend most of my time reading/browsing/videos, I am really wanting to hold out for a Retina display. I really like the size and especially the weight of the mini.

That's a fair point. I'd too wait for the retina display.

Thos of you planning to switch if it comes in a retina, what would be your reasons?

I have a retina version and a mini. I find more and more I use the mini. Just gave a presentation with it yesterday in fact. I really like the small size and weight. Personally the lack of a retina display doesn't really bother me. I also find the mini really easy to use for reading. The only issue I have is that I have the Logitech the keyboard covers for both and it is tougher to use the keyboard cover with the mini. The cover is very nice but not much space on the mini version.

For those in love with the mini you might want to check out the next iPad. It is rumored to be more like the mini, smaller bezel which reduces the overall size and much lighter.

IME regular ipad is big for using lying in bed/etc

iphone/ipod forcing mobile = horrible

Well for us Android users,

I have ditched my 10" tablet in favor of a 7" tablet. They are just perfect in size/weight. Anything larger and it is too much weight.

I get a kick out of this. People who previously balanced a notebook/laptop computer on their knees for years are now all up in arms that a 9.5" tablet is "too heavy..."

To each his/her own and I'm not knocking it, just find it strange/funny.

Regards

For me, a 7" tablet is not an either/or with a notebook/laptop.

I travel with an 11.6" notebook as I need the functionality. I own an iPad and also an ASUS Transformer. I wouldn't travel with either of those and my notebook as they are too similar in size. But I do travel with a Nexus 7 3G as it is significantly smaller and fills a niche.

For me, the 7" size is "wearable" - it goes into most jacket pockets or even my pant pocket in a pinch. Anything bigger is a "luggable".

The iPad mini is great! In terms of work, I mainly use it for Email / Task management, which is great. I can't imagine writing a whole lot on it, i'm a 1-3 sentence email kind of guy. I can say it's definitely better for consuming and organising, not the best for creating a lot (but I would say the same about the regular iPad).

Very different use cases. A laptop supports itself while in use -- weight that matters is carry weight -- you don't hold it up with your arms or hand in use. A tablet, you typically fully support while using it, or have to use it flat on a surface (or on a keyboard dock, which might as well be a laptop at that point.)

I have a top of the line full-sized iPad with the retina display and an iPad Mini, and I find I'm using the Mini more because it's such a handy size. For travel, the Mini is hard to beat - it's light and reasonably small, but the screen is much more readable than a smartphone screen or iPod Touch.

Not until they get a retina display, but probably not even then. The text clarity is much better, but I think I would find a 7" screen too small to stare at for anything besides light use. I don't find the regular iPads to be prohibitively heavy, especially compared to every laptop I've ever owned.
