Using Windows Live Mail for the first time
 

I plan to sign up for a new Gmail account soon and I plan to use Windows Live Mail with it.

I would like to find out where does Windows Live Mail save your emails by default. Is it possible to create folders on your computer and have that as a back up?

Slightly OT with Gmail, where does Gmail store your emails? And what would be the best option to store emails with Gmail and Windows Live Mail?

Where your mail is stored depends on what you are reading your mail with, not which provider you are using.

If you are using the gmail or outlook website to view your mail, it's stored in the cloud, and there is no local copy.

If you are using some other reader it may or may not have the ability to download and save the messages, totally depends on what you get.

I'll be using Windows Live Mail. And I plan to use IMAP with Gmail on Windows Live Mail.

Yes, but I think the question is about the local copy that the Live Mail client creates.

I currently use MSN and MSN Explorer as my email client. There are 2 email folders, "Folders on MSN" which is email stored on a server and "Folders on your computer" which emails are stored on the computer. I was just wondering if I can create the same using Windows Live Mail.

Is there a reason you'd need to do this? IMAP essentially keeps your local email folders in sync with those on Gmail's end in the cloud.

Just as a back-up. I don't want to accidentally delete an email that is saved.

As the title says on that thread, I was asking which email provider to go for.

Now, as I am leaning towards Gmail, I will be using Windows Live Mail as my email client. I really didn't get an answer on how to store messages on Windows Live Mail or on Gmail.

The question really doesn't make sense to me, or to a lot of others, I suspect. Both are web mail services. You don't "use" one and store your mail on the other. You use whichever you like and store your mail on it. You usually access these services via their web pages.

I think Microsoft now calls Outlook Express "Live Mail client". You can use that with either service through IMAP. in either case, your email will be resident on the server unless you specifically download it to a local archive file and delete the server copy.

So, use Outlook Express/Live Mail if you wish, and choose whichever web service you like for your email provider.

Currently, I am using MSN explorer. The client has an option called "Folders on your computer." That is where I store my saved emails.

This is how my email client is set up. For my saved emails, Its under "Folders on my computer." I access it using this client. I was wondering if I can do the same with Windows Live Mail.

You have had plenty of tips - have you tried using online chat/tech support with MSN as it might be an undocumented feature that rest of us aren't familiar with? I bailed out of paid MSN and transitioned my MSN into a Live account 5 years ago & never looked back, it's now fully converted/upgraded to an Outlook account, essentially a free Microsoft account that dance & run on Windows 8 - it has great options for customization, and I can do a single Sign-Onand toggle between @live, @msn and @outlook accounts, and their aliases which can be optionally setup as folders to screen for spams, junks & marketing types, etc. - and forwarded (i.e. to Gmail - and, vice versa ...)

The best way to learn is to practice & explore, get familiarize with it by using it - until you get comfortable with it and then find new/better ways of configuring it to make lives easier in the informational age. Life isn't about living in fear of losing, it's about facing it head on and run with it - you learn to overcome challenges, obstacles, danger and take advantage of it, and grow.

This is primariy a FT sub-forum and not a $S forum, there are sites out there - please google & join those too. One final tip on this topic for you - it's obvious to most but not all, setup a free secondary or additional $S Outlook/MSN/Live account and you can forward all/some/selected ones from one account to another, leaving copies on the "other" account alone - that will minimize the risk of accidental delete, until you click on it affirmatively. The email messages will be kept on the server/cloud storage - and better as I do not have to worry about maintaining the local shared drive folders & storage space running low, or crashes, etc.

Nothing is foolproof and everything is as foolproof as we designate it to be ... Good luck ! ;)
