Gmail has an 'improvement' but ...
Gmail has gone and improved itself - selecting reply to a message opens a small box with less options ... I think they are testing on phones and tablets ... But I am reading on a desktop and would prefer the old way. However, ...
Selecting reply does not now quote the incoming message - I like to quote the message I received and interline my replies (and I do edit out the unnecessary). I can't figure out how to choose quoting as an option when I chose reply. Surely somewhere there is a setting. Ideas? A better place to look for an answer than the experts here? I didn't see anything on the Gmail forum I looked at, and I have switched back to the old way; I don't see anyplace to give any input. I'm glad this forum is here! Sylvia |
The new look has been out for a while now - apparently they finally made people switch.
All replies are still quoted. It just doesn't show by default, but it's there. To see the trimmed content, click the three small dots at the bottom of the reply text input field. All the former options are still there, too - click the underlined A by the Send button for formatting options, or hover your mouse over the paper clip or plus signs for more insertion options - links, pictures, etc. |

And if you only want to quote part of the original email in your reply, highlight the text you want to quote and then press "reply"

works in t-bird also. Doesn't that work in most mail apps?

highlighting, partial quoting, ...
That used to work in Gmail; it doesn't for me in the improved Gmail, though I do now see the ... in the corner - very faint - I overlooked them - hovering over ... does display words about quoting text. Hmm, maybe highlighting some, pressing reply, press those three dots ... nope that doesn't work ...

Quote selected text is an option you have to turn on in labs.

How to Switch Back to Old Gmail Compose (Temporarily) I'm confident that one of the gmail extension providers (like Gmelius) will offer a more permanent solution soon. |

This isn't about the 'new look'. That was rolled and forced on people a year ago. This is about the new "compose" which very few people even knew anything about until 2 days ago when the change was forced on them with no notice or warning.
Try http://productforums.google.com/foru...nding-messages. Not that google will listen to anyone and it's full of condescending TCs telling everyone to shut up and do what google wants.:td: Ahem. http://theoatmeal.com/pl/state_web_w...acebook_layout |

Yes, that's what I meant. I've been using the new compose for quite some time. It's fine.

Indeed. +1!

In what way is a small window tucked away in the wrong corner of the screen with reduced functionality, less productive and time wasting "fine"?
A service that you pay nothing for, but for which most people would pay a significant amount, changes its UI slightly. Big deal. If you don't like it, check out Office 365. |
Chalk me up as one of the folks that LIKES the new compose window. Sorry to rain on your complaint-parade, but it's nicer and easier for me to keep everything on one screen.
|
I don't really like it but I am not going to waste my time worrying about it. I am sure I'll get used to it quick enough.
Life is too short to drink cheap beer,or something like that.;) |
I don't particularly like the new compose window myself, but I will say there's one thing about it I find nice. Being able to actually see another email in the window behind it can be real useful. I type enough emails that I need to reference an email that I'm not forwarding or replying to, it's made that a little easier.

Which you could easily do before. You can't even seen half the email with the new compose box. The box blocks off half the email.
I don't necessarily really like gmail in the first place, but it integrates so well with my phone, I put up with using the browser based version. |

You could see an email that you were replying to or forwarding, but could you see an arbitrary one when you were just doing a new compose? I have to admit, I never really spent a lot of time looking for a way to do it. And the screen I do most of my work on is large enough that the new method lets me see enough of what's behind it that it generally works for me.

I really don't like this new "feature". I switched back to the old style in March, but yesterday, I found this was no longer possible. I use gmail on my computer, not on my phone or a tablet.
|
I don't like it as much as the old version, but I don't see it causing any major headache. I will say that today must be the first time I even tried to reply to something because it popped up a little tutorial showing the dots and how to change the reply/reply all/forward setting. Everything that comes into my gmail account is coming from a computer (receipts, statements, spam) so I've never bothered before. Fortunately, my primary account is Office 365.

I've switched back to the basic html version.
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox Very frustrating when they "improve" what needed no improvement simply for the sake of being new. |
