Mmmm......

While I don't have the Pixel, I did get a great deal on a Samsung Chromebook and am pretty impressed. I've tried taking only my iPad but I just have to have a keyboard and mouse.

I hope you don't type much! I can't rely upon any tablet if I have to be productive on a trip, as the typing - even with modified keyboard apps - is simply too cumbersome. My Chromebook is now my go-to travel device.

1/3 less in price? Really? My 64GB Verizon iPad begs to differ.

If you are going to troll, I could fire back with the Acer Chromebook C7 - which is HALF of what an iPad costs!

Did you take the laptops with you on the trip but used the Pixel more or did you decide to take the Pixel instead of the laptops? [If you know Scott you know this is a reasonable question]

Did you miss the Windows 8 laptop at any point in time on these trips? Why?

Did you appreciate that you had the Pixel instead of your Windows laptop at any point in time on these trips? Why?

You almost have me convinced to take a look at getting one of these to get the Google Drive space and a sleek machine for browsing.

Yes, I had both machines with me - Pixel and Asus Taichi 21.

Nope - everything I was doing was cloud based. In fact, something I wanted to do on my Windows 8 machine turned out to be more hassle than I wanted, so I switched to the Pixel and did it through Google Docs instead.

That said, Pixel is not well suited for watching movies or listening to music on the go.

The Pixel hardware feels better than the Taichi 21. The more I use Windows 8, the more it annoys me.

Well worth it - and if you have time (and the money), I'd recommend the LTE version.

I type stuff all the time. I even talk to it. You need to break the physical keyboard habit, it takes about 2 weeks.

Google office suite to me is about as equally useless as any of the Office ipad tools out there.

Now in full disclosure, I don't write books while I'm travelling. Just emails and content consumption.

Sorry, I was being generous. The iPad is actually about 40% cheaper. (64gb LTE Retina iPad $849 - 64gb CBP with LTE - $1449)

But I can use my iPad in coach! Good luck with that clamshell! ;)

As quick as you may be on a virtual keyboard, surely you must be even quicker on a real one. And speaking to your tablet while on a plane must be a sight to behold ;)

I'm good at various methods of input, but given the flexibility it provides and the larger screen size without being cumbersome, my Chromebook with its 11.6 inch display and traditional keyboard provides me with the greatest productivity on the road.

I agree with you that for more complex functions, Google Office isn't as nice as MS, but for basic spreadsheets and docs (mostly all I need), it's more convenient and fine on my Chromebook.

If I could get real internal storage on it, I'd be all over buying one to reformat to a full version of Linux (better still, Windows, if the drivers are there); dual core i5 and lack of a discrete GPU is a little weak for my use [software development, gaming, photo editing], but it'd be worth it for the screen.

But 3:2? Not sure why that would fly.

It's a nice halfway between 16:10 and 4:3; it also matches DSLR resolutions. I'm very displeased with 16:9, and back in the day was somewhat displeased with 4:3 -- in large part because of being too tall and unwieldy in coach. A little taller than 16:10 sounds like it might be good option.

Uh oh. No movies on the plane or in the hotel could be a killer for me. What are the issues?

BTW, thanks for the explanations. Very useful and neutral!

Doesn't it have an SD card slot? With SD so cheap, offline media consumption makes some sense (assuming it has player apps...)
