Android car stereo?

I have a couple of road trips coming up shortly after the holidays and during spring break. In preparation for those two adventures, I am looking to replace my slowly dying stereo with one of those gorgeous Android units with a 7" screen(Android Stereo).

Does anyone have any experience with an Android stereo?

Parrot is the largest brand with an Android deck - they currently have a single din unit, with a dual din version on the way, along with two external android stereo options. :

The one you linked to looks decent, but I doubt support is very strong. It comes with outdated Android, most likely won't have access to the Google market either.

One other options is to pick a unit with Mirrorlink technology and a matching phone with Mirrorlink (like the Galaxy S3).

FWIW; there the upcoming Parrot units:

Doesn't this kind of product lead you into the same trap that pre-installed GPS users face? Expensive updates, quickly outdated technology, etc. What benefits/integration wouldn't be available by plugging an existing tablet into a car's USB port?

With something like Google maps, you are not at the mercy of the GPS makers.

Those are interesting units, however I'm hard pressed to see their value when similar devices are already in most peoples hands.
Screen wise you gain 0.2" to 2" over most phones in peoples pocket. Beyond that, nothing else. You lose Google Play and Amazon App access I think with the Parrot devices AND you have to bring you own iNet access.

Now that Asteroid Smart on the other hand, nice, very very nice indeed!

You can have an oem-like installation if you have the right car.

I imagine the same approach can be adapted to other cars with similar nav pods.

Hardwired power, audio and GPS. Designed to stay in the car so fine with heat and cold. No risk of theft (or lower than with a phone). I would prefer a fixed unit over having to mess with my phone. Though I would only pick a unit that supports Spotify...
