Any Experience With CrashPlan?

It seems like the perfect idea for me: Unlimited storage, online backup, etc., and all for $35/year. Is it a similar service to Microsoft's SkyDrive or DropBox, that I download it and have access to it from Windows Explorer and from the web? Is there a better service? Is there a cheaper service? Is there a catch?

Unless you have a coupon Crashplans cheapest unlimited is $49.99U$D a year.
Allows one 1(one) PC to use it(local client).
There is always google drive, rolling your own 'cloud' based storage, hosting your own NAS.
Catch? sure ready the AuP, EULA, and privacy notices and determine if you want to use the service.

CrashPlan is $139.99 for 4 years, which comes out to $34.997/year.

Google Drive only has 5 GB free, so I would also need to pay to expand.

CrashPlan is for backups. It's not a live storage service like Dropbox.

You don't have web access.

It's awesome at backups, and cheaper than losing all your files.

The catch is that you back up at the speed of your internet connection. If you have 500GB of stuff to back up, that might be a while, and if your connection has a limit, it might be expensive. They have an option to ship you a drive for initial backups or restores, but it's expensive.

I've been using it for a few years, and it's excellent at what I want it to do (back up my stuff). I also use Dropbox and like it: they're very different tools.

But will they be around in 4 years? Mighty expensive if they shutdown after a year.

I know past performance is no indicator of future performance, but I signed up with them two years ago and haven't had any indications that they're not sustainable.

We use them in our small operation for a particular server. We've had an account for two years now with no dramas.

In fact the off-site storage helped immensely when we suffered a surge thanks to our neighbour deciding to do his own electrical work on three-phase power (dork!). Our so called electrical protections failed (suppler's response: not covered by our guarantee mate) and the back-ups on site were toast - so we were able to reconstruct using CrashPlan.

I use them for a few family laptops and a few servers. The backup software works well. It's basically a "set and forget" model.

I haven't had to restore anything yet...

Haven't used them, but have used Mozy for several years and have been very pleased.

Crashplan is awesome, because you can use it for free.

I have my laptop backup every day to my server at home over VPN.

I used to use Mozy. It still feels more "solid" to me...I don't worry about CrashPlan losing data or I wouldn't keep using it...but there's something about Mozy that just felt a little more professional. I don't know. But CrashPlan is significantly cheaper than Mozy, which is why I switched.

It's a nice feature. I don't use it, however. :)

Is Mozy a similar service as Dropbox? And do they work well as backup?

OP, what are you wanting to do?
From your posts it seems you are looking for an all you can eat online storage solution with web and PC access. NOT a 'back up' solution.
