Question for laptop users

I'm flying to AUA next week on the 753 and like usual, the IFE options suck. I'm gonna bring my laptop but since they have no powerports on this aircraft I was wondering if anyone knows from experience which option uses less power and gives me more battery life. Do I get more battery life watching a streaming movie say on itunes versus watching a dvd which uses the computer dvd driver or does it not make a difference i terms of battery life.

Watching a video that is streamed from the hard disk will use less battery, as the DVD drive requires much more additional power to spin the disk.

Watching it from a flash drive may improve your run time even more, if your power options let you spin down the disk.

Other things you can do (how much of an improvement you will get depends on your laptop)
  • shut off bluetooth and wireless
  • dim the display
  • kill processes you don't need that may be accessing the disk (like virus scanners, etc)
  • go into your power management utility and set everything you can to maximum battery life

Definitely run it off the HD, in fact, if you have an SD card slot for digital cameras put the video file on there and crank up your power settings to turn the HD off after inactivity.

Cheers,
Adam

+1 for the flash drive
