Ipads do not have NFC support.

IPhones have NFC support starting with the IPhone 6 - but control freak Apple does not let any app except Apple Pay access the reader.

If you have Cardpeek installed on your computer along with a supported NFC device (I use a HID OmniKey 5321) this works too. You'll need to enter the entire second row of text from the bottom of the photo page. Weirdly though it shows nothing for gender even though the passport book itself does.
