Unlocking SIM for ATT 4s
|
Interesting. I wonder how it works.
|
Being it ONLY works with AT&T and a specific set of iOS rev`s I'd say its a re-brand or a remake of the gevey sim.
|
On a Gevey SIM, you have to start and abort a 112 call to get the foreign SIM to boot. This SIM doesn't require this. There was a device being sold by a UK firm that this reminds me more of. It, however, worked with every SIM.

The point of "only ATT"
The other networks in the US that sell iphones are CDMA, he mentions that it won't work with Verizon and Sprint. Should work on all GSM only units with those firmwares?

If it is a "clone" of the Gevey SIM it won't work on all basebands i.e. it won't work on baseband 04.11.08

The iPhone 4s is GSM/CDMA somewhat of a 'WorldPhone' Verizon will enable the GSM side upon request for travel OUTSIDE of the US. I suspect Sprint would do the same. From what I understand the VzW phone knows its 'home' and will NOT allow/use the GSM stuff when its in the US.
Your description is pretty much correct. Sprint does the same thing. Both Verizon and Sprint will unlock the phone to work with foreign SIMs on request. But it's not a full unlock - the phone will still only work with Verizon or Sprint in the US. |
Has anyone tried the Gevey unlocking thing first-hand? The latest version doesn't require calling 112 and sounds like a dream come true, but their site isn't very consumer-friendly. (It makes it sound like you have to "jailbreak" your phone, which is something I specifically do not want to do since it would void my warranty, ability to upgrade, etc. Gevey assured me on the phone today that I don't need to do any kind of jailbreak to use their product, however.)
I'm traveling to Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam, and my working plan is to take my iPhone 4S, buy one of these Gevey things, and then just buy a new data-only SIM (typically very cheap!!) in each of those countries. I'm told by Gevey that I need to "reset" the Gevey device (using a special "reset SIM" they give you with it) between each SIM, and I'm also told that when I get back home, I can pop my original AT&T SIM back into the phone and it's as if I never did anything. Can anyone confirm that this Gevey thing works? It's clearly a hack but a pretty brilliant one if it will work as I've outlined above. |

I would also be interested in using one in a 3GS or an iPhone 4 ,

Just keep in mind that the Gevey SIM is not compatible with later versions of the baseband. [settings>>about>modem firmware]

You may want to check this service instead for permanent unlock , http://www.officialiphoneunlock.co.uk/att-iphone-unlock.php
It costs £45 but you got factory unlock. |

It costs £45 but you got factory unlock. Also, this company doesn't seem to know the GSM standard for retrieving IMEIs is just to dial *#06#. |

I smell a rat. I highly doubt that Apple or AT&T would let third parties unlock iPhones.

Also, this company doesn't seem to know the GSM standard for retrieving IMEIs is just to dial *#06#. I'm suspicious of ANYTHING that isn't official, only because I don't want to jailbreak my phone or otherwise screw it up. My phone is my life and I run my businesses from it... I can't mess around with beta/hack software, and when new iOS versions are released, I want to be able to upgrade, not wait a few weeks/months until the jailbreaks catch up. (Plus if anything goes wrong with my phone, I want to be able to take it to my local Apple Store without anyone looking at it funny and saying "oh, it's jailbroken, you voided the warranty" and that's that.) I get the appeal of a jailbreak or unsanctioned unlock (I used to be the guy that ran bleeding-edge beta software) but it's just not for me anymore. That's why the Gevey is so appealing: it does the job but (in theory) can be popped out and my phone returns 100% to normal. |
They do unlock just like factory unlock and I have used it with sim card from Hong Kong, Japan and other countries.
No jailbreak needed and when you do IMEI check , it does report it back as unlocked. There are other online services that does this, you may want to check this thread http://modmyi.com/forums/unlocking-activation/811499-unlocking-my-iphone-t-question.html |
This technique has been around for a while. I suspect that someone is bribing someone somewhere, but I have no proof of it.
