Interesting. I talked to a T-mobile rep about this a few weeks back and I got a different answer.

My issue was an old phone I had tossing around that I wanted to unlock for use in China. What I was told was to put my SIM in it for 45 days and then call to request an unlock--the unlock has to come from customer service and they'll only do it when the phone has been used for at least the last 45 days.

He knew I was prepaid, he didn't ask about account balances.

The 45 days aren't up yet so I can't confirm that he's right.

Followup--I got the unlock. She seemed to only care about identifying the phone and about balances.

I've had a couple phones unlocked by very well-rated code vendors on eBay. It really isn't that hard if you find out your phone is unlockable via Google searching.

That's how I've done it. Pay about $5-10 depending on the phone, they send you a code and you enter it in the phone. Entire process takes 5-10 minutes of total time.

You certainly and immediately qualify for the unlock code since you qualify as a former T-mobile customer even of you are not with T-mobile. As Scott suggested, you will have to keep trying until you can get them to understand and respect their own policy. Don't give up.

I worked for T-Mobile until 10 months ago (and still have several friends who work there.....from reps all the way up to site managers) and this is not entirely true. If you are a former T-Mobile customer you can request an unlock code within 90 days of the end of your service.

More followup:

We got tripped up by something I didn't think of.

The phone unlocked and works with a Chinese SIM in it. The phone turns out not to support Unicode, though--text messags are utterly destroyed.

I bought Mrs. Swede a Samsung Galaxy S5 back in March. Zero down and on EIP.

Long story short: I forgot to unlock it prior to leaving for Sweden. I called T-Mobile (611 while on wifi calling), and I literally had the unlock code in my e-mail by the time I hung up with the agent. ^^^
