Would you be interested in an app that tracks your trip?
 

Dear fellow travellers

Some of my very good friends are working on a new app for cell phones that tracks your everyday life, e.g. your position, the music your listen to, your photos etc. with the purpose of giving you an easy way to go back an re-experience your past adventures in a fun and engaging way. It's like a diary or travel log that writes itself.

I think it could be valuable for the leisure traveller and families who want to somehow document their vacation without having to take field notes. With that app they can share their trip with grandma when they get home in an easy way.
But it could also prove to be useful to the business traveller who keeps track of expenses from many different meals, locations, hotels etc. Having an easy way to access where you were at a given time, incl. the picture you took of that receipt which is now missing, could be a life saver in an IRS audit.

In order to get the app out to the public they are investigating potential partnerships with airlines who can offer a free introductory download (on the in flight wifi?) as part of the itinary or boarding pass.

In this regard they are interested in the opinions of travellers and travel industry professionals.

What do you think?

1) would you as a traveller find such a service offer interesting and useful?
2) do you think an airline would find this valuable as they build community?

If the airline could request the user to access (anonymously) some of their tracking data the information gathered could be of enormous value to them: Where passenger come from before arriving at the airport? Did he take the train, bus or car? How long prior to check-in/departure time did he arrive? Did he hire a car upon arrival? Where did he go? etc etc.

I have tried to check if this post violates forum policy, e.g. by being "promotional" and thus I have of course removed the name of the app/service. This is not about promotion – it's about feedback and dialogue with potential users. I do apologize if there is some other policy I have overlooked. I am only doing this because I really like the project my friends are doing and I know they would value the feedback they can get in here.

I would never ever use such an app, then again I would never ever use Facebook, or most other forms of social media, I value things like privacy, I guess that I am a minority these days.............

Why would anyone want their "everyday life" tracked??? If I want to check in at a location, I can already use Yelp, Foursquare or probably many other apps.
The app. you describe seems to me like "big brother" tracking your every move. I can not see why anyone would want this by choice!

NOPE. I would never want to be tracked in any form. Period. I'd rather pay for the meal that I lost the receipt for (although an almost nil possibility since I just have to sign a declaration).

Facebook and Google+ already do this, with millions of users already connected. You have a major uphill battle for competition.
I can already store this on my phone, why do I want to send it to a third party? If I'm worried about my phone getting lost/stole, Google+ and others allow automatic upload to the cloud of all pictures you take.
Those who worry about their privacy are going to be very reluctant to allow airlines or others to provide this app, since they will be worried about what data they are actually receiving.
No. I can already do this with FB if I wish.
Airlines already have plenty of this data from your PNR, linked mileage/points accounts, etc. Not sure they would gain any additional info.


I'm sure Facebook, Yelp, Foursquare, etc. are more than happy to sell the airlines all the data they gather without the airlines having to manage it themselves.

You also have some technical issues. Automatic tracking would require GPS to be enabled all the time, which is a battery killer. It also does not work in subways and buildings, so precise tracking would be difficult.

You have a major uphill battle against entrenched competition and privacy concerns, but good luck.

My international cell provider does something like it but on a much lower level. Make a call and it records the date, time, and location on a map for you. More than once I've made a call to just check messages at home to put a pin on the map I could go back to later.

But that's about where I draw the line, I don't want to have every keypress tracked, don't want it watching my music or my photos.

I can understand there's a market for it, it's just not me. I'm not a huge fan of the tracking places, I would never put the progressive insurance tracking module in the car for example no matter how much money it would save me.

there are enough intrusions on a person's life these days, I don't really need an app whose sole purpose is to interfere with my privacy.
