iPhone 3 with local SIM in NZ?

Hi folks

I'll be in NZ for about a month.

Normally, just roam with my UK O2 SIM, but this time I was planning on getting a 2degrees SIM on arrival, and buying a 'Combo pack' with 50mb data for starters.

My iPhone is unlocked.

Is it simply a case of sticking the new SIM in? Are there a lot of settings to fiddle with? I'll need to swap back to the O2 SIM every once in a while to check for messages.

More importantly, can I turn off 3G usage easily? (I expect to have pretty frequent access to free wifi, and I don't want to be using up my 50mb of data unnecessarily.) Ordinarily, I'd just turn off data roaming, but I guess with a local SIM I wouldn't be roaming any more ...

Thanks

When you say your iPhone is unlocked- are you sure you mean SIM unlocked, or are you just jailbroken?

If your baseband is SIM unlocked, then yes, you should just be able to put a foreign sim card into the device.

Yes, just insert SIM. Turning off 3G is simple. Settings/Network/General.

But that's not what you want from what you said, you really want to turn off data roaming, location services, and make sure you don't use push settings for email or any apps if you want to control your data usage. You need to do a bit of research for that or you could end up using a lot of data.

InfoMofo: UK had factory unlocked (sim free as they say there) iphones from day 1. USA has them now too.

Thanks for the help. Yes, it's SIM-unlocked, not jailbroken.

I've just had a look in

Settings > General > Network > Cellular data

Presumably if switch that off, I can't eat into the 50mb bundle, right? I would just turn it on as & when needed (pretty much what I currently do with 'Enable Data Roaming' when abroad with my UK SIM).

How can it be unlocked and not jailbroken? It's always been my understanding that in order to do an unlock on a locked device you need to jailbreak in order to do an unlock. All the stuff I've ever read on the net about unlocking says that you need to jailbreak to unlock. As far as unlocking sometimes the newest firmware doesn't have an unlock immediately.

iPhones sold outside the US are able to be carrier unlocked. ;)

Yes, now that you mention it, I think that will work.

I think we used to fake the APN settings out to do something similar before they had that setting.
