I would like to copy my leagle paid for, commercial copy protected VHS tapes to DVD-R.
I have a DVR, but get the copy protected message. I fully understand, and respect, the protection laws and making illeagel copies, but this is not the case, i just want to protect my big library.Is there any inexpensive device I can to apply to the decision of this problem?

First define 'inexpensive' then we can help.
At a minimum you will need;
1 VCR
1 PC/Laptop to capture with
1 Capture Card
1 Capture Software
Either a large drive to hold the data or lots of blanks
Patience to play the VHS normally., e.g. a 120 minute VHS tape full will take 120 minutes to capture

For a hardware solution look on ebay, craigslist or google SIMA CT 2 or CT200.

It is a hardware box that connects between your VCR and DVD recorder using composite or S-VHS cables

Сommercial VHS tape has macrovision which is a form of copy protection. You need a DVD recorder that removes Macrovision or can be hacked to remove Macrovision, but the market for them is pretty small since so few people have VHS tapes anymore.You will need a DVD Recorder, and, Grex video stabilizer(macrovision remover) to transfer your VHS media to DVD.

Or, just scour your local Craigslist (or similar) for a shop offering a VHS-to-DVD service. Probably far less hassle in the end.

At this point why not look on craigslist or ebay for the dvds at a cut rate price? They're end of life at this point what with $7.98/mo netflix streaming subscriptions and bluray prices dropping. If your time is worth much to you, you might even save some money and pick up a bunch of new movies.
