Anyone know how to open a .dmg file on an iPad?

title says it all

is there some easy way - or a app that I can use to open & read a downloaded file - .dmg - and send it to my iPad to be opened & read?

thanks

What are you trying to open it on? If it's a mac it should just open, and you can copy the files.

If it's windows, that's a bit more work, google

open dmg <<your version of windows>>

and you will find solutions.

I don't believe you can do anything with it on the ipad, you need to open it and copy the files to the Ipad.

nope. what are you trying to do (other than read a dmg)? why can't the file that's on the dmg be sent directly, skipping the dmg?

ok - very sorry to be so vague

I'm trying to help my mom with this problem

she has downloaded a book/magazine from a website - it arrives as a download on her iMac - which she has no problem opening

It is a .dmg file

However - when she tries to open this on her iPad - is does not work

I am looking for the easiest way to help her view this on her iPad - it would be easier for me if she wasn't 2000 miles away - :)

If any of you have ever tried to help your parents with computer issues - on the phone - you may know it is not always fun

lol

thanks for any replies

dmg files are disk images, which the ipad does not support. she needs to double-click the dm and then copy the book/magazine from the dmg to the mac.

then the question is what format is that file and can the ipad read it.

if it's a common format like pdf or epub, it will just work. sync it with itunes.

if it's something else, then it may need to be converted, and if it requires a custom app to view it (which is my guess since why else would it be distributed on a dmg), then it may not work at all unless there's a native ipad app.

Thanks pdxer

Assuming it does open into a PDF file - I'm not quite sure how I would transfer that into iTunes?

Any insight would be so appreciated

Thanks so so much!

I don't have iPad but assume you can use email to get from one machine to another?

Within Adobe Reader on the Mac, you would start by saving a copy of the PDF. Pull down "File" then "Save a Copy..." If the file is large, you may wish to send it via some technique other than email. There are many free services that upload large files and send an email link to the recipient for download. Yousendit.com is free for files less than 50 MB and seems to be spam free.

drag/drop to itunes and then sync. it shows up as an ebook. use ibooks (free download) to read it.

there are also other apps that can read pdfs and which offer additional features over ibooks, but they may not be free.

Thanks for all your replies - I'll be trying this out this weekend

I have to say if your Mom thinks she is downloading a book and instead a .dmg file is downloaded that sounds like it could be a virus/trojan trying to take advantage of less computer literate users.

You really only see .dmg files if you were installing an application. It is not exactly synonymous but it would be very similar on Windows to downloading a .exe file.

I would proceed with caution.

Also keep in mind if it was a book file (.pdf or .epub) there would be no reason to make it Mac specific and compress it in a .dmg as oppose to .zip.

exactly. if it really is a book that's distributed on a dmg, it's probably a proprietary format that comes with its own proprietary viewing application, which means it can't be viewed on anything other than a mac (and presumably windows too if you downloaded the windows viewer) unless it can be exported to a normal standard format.
