iPhone 4 Memory

If you buy a new iPhone 4 16 GB, how much memory is available when you first set it up before installing a single additional app or even a contact?

What are the same answers for the iPhone 4 32 GB?

How much memory do forum members feel is actually needed?

My iPhone 4 is a 16GB, and in the 'about' section says the capacity is 14GB. I know I have about 10GB of music (more or less 2000 songs) on the thing, and that about 4GB is still available. So that means the system uses more or less 2GB.

Didn't you say earlier that you didn't plan to listen to music on your phone?

Yes, that's correct. I was thinking that pictures, video and apps use a lot of memory.

I recall that on my Palm TX (if this is a valid analogy) the Zagat application's data section ate up a lot of space.

By the way, if you have 2,000 songs then your collection is worth much more than your iPhone. Impressive! :)

2000 is nothing. I have over 5000 songs in my library, over half of which are ripped from CDs that own. I know people with over 20,000 songs.

I got the 32GB iPhone 4 (which has about 29GB of space available), upgraded from a 16GB iPhone 3. I felt that I needed the extra space if I was going to use the phone for another two years and my various libraries kept growing. I have about 10GB of music. I have probably 30GB of photos, though I only keep the last half dozen or so events on my phone. Then movies I sync when I know I want to watch something. Video podcasts take up space too. Regardless I was really starting to push it with the 16GB phone if I wanted to still bring all that with me easily.

Apps are usually not very big though there are more and more exceptions to that with large games and GPS apps starting to be 500+ MB easily.

So I can't really answer which is better for you though just some thoughts to help you decide.

I separate my music from my mobile device, so no issue with buying the basic 16Gb, and having all my music collection on the iPod Classic (remember those?). That being said, there is anecdotal evidence from headfi the iPhone 4 has better sound quality than the iPod...

So to answer your question 16Gb is plenty for me - YMMV

You can never have too much memory.

Really? You mean there's someone who would pay a grand or two for my 10,000 song collection?

How do I cash in?

+1.

I often rip movies from dvds I own to the iphone and watch them during my trips. Figure on 1 GB per 2 hr movie. Most apps don't take up much memory. The one exception is my GPS app (Navigon) since it has to store all of the maps locally. I believe that might be 1 GB (I don't have the phone with me right now).

I had assumed that the gentleman who left that message paid for the music at an average price $1 per song.

Ahh - then you should replace "is worth" with "cost". ^

95% is ripped from CDs I own. Thinking about it, a CD which cost me about $12 and has 12 songs on it..... It never occurred to me how much I spent on music.

No one says that you have to put every bit of music you own on your phone. I used to have a playlist of my top 4GB of music when I had a 4GB iPod Nano.

The iPhone 4, no matter which model has 512 MB of RAM (memory).

In terms of storage space, the OS occupies about 640 MB of the storage space (16GB, 32GB etc) Then the storage space is further reduced by the formatting of the disk itself (the 16 GB/32GB is the pre formatted drive space), the 16 GB has about 14.5 GB of user accessible storage space, while the 32GB has about 30.1 GB of user accessible storage space.
