Potential huge cell phone news - Nokia and Microsoft make agreement on smartphones

Here is the article. This could be huge. Nokia will move to WM7 from Symbian. Good riddance to Symbian. This makes me much more likely to go to Nokia if they can get some WM 7 smartphones on VZW in would be fantastic for me. This could be a real game changer.

Oops - I missed this one when I had a scan. Could a kind moderator fold my own thread into this one?

Actually, I think WM7 is far from a burning platform and should do well in its own right, in the long run (and with or without Nokia). However, I also think Elop is full of ---- and that what Nokia really needed was someone to come in, knock heads together and make the the great technology they already have competitive.

WP7 is a fantastic OS - it just needed someone to fully commit to it - and Nokia is a fantastic choice.

Their great technology is hardware. This gives them a decent OS finally. And it gives Microsoft a hardware platform with serious global reach and name recognition. This is a win for both companies and the customers because it will give some serious competition to the rest of the market.

This author feels that Microsoft basically bought Nokia for free:

We will see. I can't imagine Google and Apple are particularly concerned.

Similar comments when Microsoft moved into the gaming market. Microsoft has money. They rarely get it right first but they have enough money to catch up pretty quick.

Why would you go from having apps to being app-less? :p

You do know that the new CEO of Nokia is an ex Microsoft VP, right? ;)

Actually in the trade press this whole thing was reported on a couple months or so ago.

Nokia implies that they got Google and Microsoft to bid against each other for the operating system.
