Mozy Alternatives?
 

I've been a long time Mozy.com backup user and just read that Mozy is dumping their unlimted backup plan. With over 200gb on mozy I need an alternative that won't cost me an arm and a leg. Any suggestions?

I've heard positive things about Carbonite, and they still have an unlimited plan.

I suspect they'll all go Mozy's route soon though.

I use Carbonite. It works quite well. There are two minor things I do not like. First, you cannot tell it to just go and backup everything that has changed using a single click. You must select each item. of course it will eventually discover and back these up on its own. Second, when accessing a file on its site it assumes you want to recover it as it assumes something happened to the original file. I would rather it just present these as files they hold, then let me decide what to do with it. Minor points, but points all the same.

I dumped Carbonite after the first day.

My favourite is Backblaze. Very simple client software that works very non-intrusively. Backups everything (except systems files) by default, good policy. But only keeps files around for 30 days after you delete them from your hard drive.

For more bling, my next fav is Crashplan. Lots of features and generous storage policy (nothing gets deleted ever). But chunky client software gets in the way sometimes.

I've heard some nice things about Crashplan. I plan to look into it, now that Mozy no longer will serve my needs.

As a long-time and very happy Mozy user, I was disappointed by this announcement. But with only 13GB being backed up, I'll probably stay with them. I do really, really like their interface and I've used them twice to restore after crashes.

Two family members have the free <2GB plans; are these going away?

Though in any online backup thread here, it's always between pretty much Mozy and Carbonite.

Jungledisk.com lets you choose between a couple of online storage providers - Rackspace Cloud Files Service or Amazon S3 - and is only a couple bucks a month for personal use (plus the storage fees)

I am not seeing the free <2GB service on Mozy's website anymore :(

Yeah, I haven't noticed it recently. I think they discontinued it.

I'll probably stick with Mozy because I only use about 13 GB of backup...not enough to really cost much more under the new plan.


edit: Mozy still offers 2 GB free. They just don't talk about it. But Google knew.

I hope they've simply quietly grandfathered current freebie <2GB accounts, since I have a couple of family members using those.

Based on the email notice Mozy sent out today:

For the first time since 2006, we’re adjusting the price of our MozyHome service and wanted to give you a heads up. As part of this change, we’re replacing our MozyHome Unlimited backup plan and introducing the following tiered storage plans:

50 GB for $5.99 per month (includes backup for 1 computer)
125 GB for $9.99 per month (includes backup for up to 3 computers)

You may add additional computers (up to 5 in total) or 20 GB increments of storage to either of the plans, each for a monthly cost of $2.00.

I was reading on another site about Backblaze.com. I haven't used it so I can't vouch, though it looks pretty similar to Mozy and still has an unlimited option.

have 113GB (RAW photo files + my music collection) backed up to Mozy....very disappointed in the news. Hesitant to switch to another provider as it will take weeks to upload everything and then they could just do the same thing mozy has done.

Surprised there isn't a viable open source option to backup to Amazon....I shouldn't have to pay jungle disk a monthly fee if I'm not using their storage....

If you're only looking for simple storage (not backup-oriented services), Google offers very reasonable rates.

The downside to Carbonite is the backup time. They throttle your upload rate, starting at 2Mbps, down to 512kbp safter 35GB, and again down to 100kbps after 200MB. I'm about 170MB into a 230MB backup, started the day after Christmas, and probably have 6 weeks left. I'm curious as to whether 100kbps will even keep up with my ongoing changes - it'll take 5-6 days to backup an average weekend photo shoot.

I don't see many options at a better price/GB rate. I may need to trim my RAW files being backed up and count on my DVD backups.
