$109 Android 2.1 7" tablet at Woot today

Woot has an Augen GENTOUCH78 Android 2.1 7" tablet today for $109, plus $5 shipping. It has an 2gb of RAM, an SD slot and appears to be built around an 800 MHz processor. The screen resolution appears to be 800 x 480. It can access the App Store.

I'm particularly broke at the moment, but I'd snap one up if I had the money.

There's a video of it in action at Gizmodo. Apparently, it's to be sold at Kmart for $150.

From laptop mag here are the cons they saw in the device.....

" * Terrible design
* Unresponsive touchscreen
* Sluggish performance
* No dedicated volume controls
* Lacks accelerometer
* Android market is currently non-functional

The $149 tablet may be affordable, but it's practically unusable."

In life, you get what you pay for.

According to later reviews, the market problem has been fixed.

Oh, cool! Then all we have to deal with now is:

* Terrible design
* Unresponsive touchscreen
* Sluggish performance
* No dedicated volume controls
* Lacks accelerometer

That's subjective.

* Unresponsive touchscreen
I've seen videos of it. It's not that bad.

* Sluggish performance
Again, the videos show its quick for web browsing.

* No dedicated volume controls
Irrelevant, at least to me.

* Lacks accelerometer
Even more irrelevant.

I broke down and got one. I'll tell you how I like it when it arrives.

Follow-up

Well, my Ausgen Gentouch came and, I have to say, I'm very happy with it. Ausgen has a patch which calibrates the screen and makes it resonably responsive for a resistive, rather than capacitive, unit. I've spent part of the day hacking, and have gotten the Google Android market place app working.

It seems perfect for watching movies and browsing the internet -- a good traveling companion when there isn't room for my laptop. For $109, I'm very pleased.

Great to hear. Hopefully these cheaper units put pressure on the high end models price wise. I was a bit disappointed to learn earlier today that the soon to be released Motorola Xoom has been priced at $799.
