Slingcatcher alternatives?
With the Slingcatcher not cheaply available are there any ready made alternatives for watching a remote Slingbox on a TV? I was considering a HTPC or laptop but I was hoping for something with a more traditional TV remote feel.

Some discussion here but no real solution. With the Slingcatcher having been discontinued, hooking up a TV to a laptop seems to be the main alternative.

key an eye on craigslist. I Picked up a few a couple months back for 100$ each. Even though I had prevsiously sold some unopened ones for 450$ on the bay. The ones i bought were OPEN, but appeared to have almost no use.

I have one of these little netbooks hooked up to my 50 inch screen, and it does a good job streaming Slingbox. I did boost the RAM up to the max, I think it is 1gb. Combine this with a wireless keyboard and mouse, and you can also watch any streaming videos from the web such as Hulu, etc.

What I really want to see is a slingcatcher APP for the apple tv, or ps3, or something like that. That would be sweet.

I would look on craigslist?

Check amazon.uk they still have them available there...and they work in the US

The UK one will work fine, I think they come with a universal adaptor and changeable plugs.

Well.... you could hack the appletv and then access slingplayer (online version) via safari, and watch it that way. I have the gen 1 Appletv and hacked it to run regular OSX, and then installed the slingplayer app on this. This is my main way of watching my shows on my slingbox.
Slingplayer doesn't just play by itself in safari without the extension/app. that said, I think we'll GET apps on the new apple tv, and hopefully then sling will release one. |
I'll keep an eye out on Craigslist but nothing is actively listed right now. So for the moment it sounds like the cheapest way is to take an old laptop, buy a USB sound card for it so I can connect a digital audio cable from the laptop to the receiver and then get a wireless keyboard and mouse for it. I already have a keyboard so I may look into getting a MS media center remote control of some kind.

I just got a lead from some ex-sling employees on NIB sling catchers, if anyone is interested. PM me for details.

get an iiPad2 or an Android pad with HDMI out.
i have a slingcatcher and an eeePad and if the android pad had been out when i bought the slingcatcher, no contest. I've also docked my moto photon to a tv and slinged onto flatscreen via hdmi as well. if the photon mm dock remote could control slingplayer. that would be great. i think sling killed the catcher when they realized pads would just kill the space. |
Slingplayer is coming to Google TV...I've heard.
