I'm looking for a inexpensive Android tab for my living room primarily for use as a remote for my media center. Just finished remodeling a second home and I need to make the remote control wife friendly (she hates tech).
I have all my media center in a closet (Tivo Premier, SlingCatcher, Onkyo receiver (NR808), DVD player) and am putting a RedEye Wifi->IR controller in there. In the living room, I want an Android pad as a wifi remote as today the RedEye will provide web based control and they are starting dev on an Android app. So - that's my profile/need for a low cost, wifi Android tablet. Remote control, web based TV guide, some mild browsing and e-mail access. Can't justify a $500 iPad for that. Could use our touch (and may) but a 7" pad screen would be nice. |
Best Buy is advertising the Huawei S7 for $300.
7-inch "HD" screen, 1 Ghz Snap Dragon, 2 cameras including a 2 MP front camea, 8 GB of storage, 512 MB of RAM. Not sure if there is an SD slot. Android 2.1, presumably Wifi-only, no 3G. The Snap Dragon probably doesn't get as much hype as the Tegra 2 will or the Hummingbird. Might not be bad, but nobody knows the quality of the screen, both in terms of visual quality or tactile responsiveness. |

If you want to buy a knockoff of iPad, I think that the best place is China. Maybe you can try Chinese "Hipad". My friend bought this one http://www.tinydeal.com/google-andro...03-p-7684.html, he told me that it functions very well, though it is very cheap. Its screen is 7 inch wide. I found another one which also looks good http://www.tinydeal.com/google-andro...03-p-4833.html, its touch screen is larger than the first one, but, also a little heavier. :p

Prices of the Chinese knockoffs range from $80 to $300.

just picked it up, this unit does have 2G, Tmobile and GSM capabilities; still trying to see if 3G works..
http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwid...588&treeId=588 this has a snapdragon 1Ghz CPU; underclocked to 768 Mhz; using it for a few days now, getting 4-5 hours battery on WIFI; slick and access to android market too.. |
Be careful when selecting a knock-off, if you go that route. Ars recently made a scathing review of the $99 device from Walgreens, the Maylong M-150. It's a shame some people will waste their money, and probably be soured on Android forever, because of shoddy tablets like this one.
