Based on my very limited 2 wk experience as a newbie, surfing the net with the kindle3 is slow, even with wifi. Sizing is an issue, as well as trying to navigate to various sites, etc.
If you have nothing else, it does work in the pinch. But my 3Gs iPhone running on TMO's edge network is faster than the Kindle 3g network! I ran them side by side at home and on the my daily train commute.... Kindle3 on wifi does run equal to the iPhone on wifi.... |

I was following this thread with a great deal of interest because I travel out of a backpack, usually camping or staying in hostels. I had exactly the same concerns/wish list as you.
So...what netbook did you decide on?

It sounds like the OP decided, web browsing was a bit more important, but really surprised that a dell streak or ipad was not considered, as it may be more ideal than a netbook.
For a backpack item I didn't want to spend a lot of money either. A basic iPad starts over $500. A Dell Steak is $300 if you want a two year ATT contract or $500+ for an unlocked one on Ebay. No interest in something I need a contract to use. For the price of either of those things I could buy the Asus and get a cheap ticket from Seattle to Florida for the weekend. :D |
Around the house I currently have an iPad, iPod Touch, Android phone, and 14" laptop. My wife has an iPhone 3Gs and Nook. When we travel for leisure, I end up taking my iPad and Android phone. She takes her nook and iPhone 3GS. She uses the Nook for e-reading and iPhone for email/web. Surprisingly, she rarely ever asks to use my iPad for web browsing. I never use my iPod Touch anymore and I'm looking to sell it.
As you can see, the device you carry and use is greatly dependent on your own uses. I don't do any e-reading and greatly prefer the iPad for web browsing and video. My Android Phone will also make a great wifi tether once I root it. My wife reads 100x more than I do, so the Nook is ideal. She doesn't do as much web browsing, but does a lot of Facebook, so her iPhone works really well. Neither of us brings a laptop for leisure travel any more. |
