I saw that about the password. Mu iPhone comes up with a password screen too. I am talking about where a browser must be launched to see and agree to the T&C first. Not necessarily a password. It is different.

Well since a Kindle holds upwards of 1,500 books (3,500 for the new version), I don't think this is really going to be a problem. Just be sure you've saved more than one book and you're good to go.

For everything else, definitely the iPad is ideal.

I guess it is different strokes for different folks. I have read at least 20 books on my iPad, but the Kindle screen is just plain painful on the eyes. Can't stand that screen.

Does this make sense?

The Kindle 2 can be read by "someone my age" in pretty bright light both outside and in the car. It also works fine with the window shade open on the sunny side of a plane. The new Kindle has 50% more contrast, so that will be better. You can select as large a font as you want and again, the new fonts are supposed to be even clearer.

Amazon gives you 30? day return privilege, so you can check it out for yourself.

I would totally go wifi only, once those hit the refrub store they will probably be under $100.

That will be a great deal, and probably not too long from now.

Can someone verify this? I'd be willing to give it a try with even a 14 day return policy...

Btw, actually read a bunch of the amazon.com>kindle community>discussions and found same answer just now, plus lots of other good information. Just placed my order for the wifi & 3G model ;)

Maybe a dumb question, but - if wifi only, there are many places where before you can do anything on the wifi connection, you need to either enter a name and code or at least agree to the terms and conditions. I am thinking specifically of Panera Bread, the local mall which has free wifi and many hotels that require you to accept their terms each day. Will the Kindle have the ability to display such a page and accept the terms etc? Anyone know how that would work?

Note that there's still a (very) basic web browser built in so you may be able to use that to connect. I used it on a Kindle 2 for a few minutes when the power was out at my house and while it honestly sucks, it's better than nothing. Supposedly it'll be a better browser than the Kindle 2.

Directly from the Amazon site:

Returning Kindle

You can return any Kindle you purchased directly from Amazon.com for a full refund within 30 days of the day you received it as long as it is in new condition and in accordance with our return policy. Your Kindle is not eligible for return and refund after the 30-day return period has expired.

I love my kindle, have bought many books waiting to board planes at the gate. For me, it is worth an extra $50 to get the 3G access. Many airports still don't have free wireless (except inside lounges like the RCC) and many full service Hiltons, Westins, and Marriotts don't provide free wifi (unless you have status). So, that $50 could pay off in the long run. YMMV

lavedder Aug 2, 2010 4:44 pm

For a Kindle with 3g access, doesn't it need to have a cell data subscription thus more recurring costs?

nerd Aug 2, 2010 4:50 pm

Someone is paying for the cell data, but it's not the Kindle owner.

Negative. Per Kindle webpage:

Free 3G Wireless – No monthly payments, no annual contracts

Not yet a kindle user but on order.

According my kindle friends, the best kept secret is free 3G access. Because no streaming, no video, no flash, nothing but just text (i.e. books), the cost of downloads relatively low and Amazon 'pays' for it. One of my friends claims he's never not had access, even in the deep woods (??)
