Cambodia: Hello

(information as of January 2011)

Hello offers 3G/GSM prepaid SIM cards in Cambodia. Like everything else in Cambodia, it's priced in USD rather than Cambodian Reals.

SIM cards can be bought at Phnom Penh airport (PNH). There's a stall right in front of you beside the taxi stall as you exit the secure area at arrivals - you can't miss it. They only take cash; if you need USD there's an ATM 20 meters on your left. I took $200, and it gave me 2 x $100 bills. When the girl at the Hello stand saw a $100 bill, there was a shocked silence, followed by oohs and aahs from her and her colleagues. She told me (yes, this is verbatim) "Sir, it's so big!". I'll take this to mean that they don't often see $100 bills. She was happy to give me change however.

The SIM card costs $2 and lasts for 120 days. In addition you will of course want some credit. 3G costs start from $1 per day, $6.60 per week, or $28 per month for 128Kbps. The fastest offered on prepaid is 512Kbps for $3.50 per day, $22 per week, or $85 per month. They say that they can offer faster on postpaid plans.

To make calls, just put the SIM in and you're ready to call.

To use 3G data, configure APN "hellowww", no username, no password, then send an SMS to enroll for 3G data. A leaflet the sales staff hand you will explain how to do this. It's very simple. Unfortunately in my case my phone kept saying "Unable to send SMS", so I called the call center on 1452. They spoke excellent English and were able to enroll me. They were also able to tell me my telephone number, which wasn't printed on the SIM or accompanying material.

Coverage in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is good, with 3G or Edge available everywhere. On the road between them, the signal is consistently strong, with internet access being GPRS or Edge. In Angkor Park, coverage is variable between Edge, GPRS, and nothing.

giffgaff.com

I think I should let you know of a MVNO in the UK (runs on o2) called giffgaff.

They are a prepaid sim, where you can use credit and get data for free until 28th Feb. From then it will be 20p per day (up to 20MB) and cheap calls and texts (8p/min, 4p/text).

The real bonus of them are the goodybags. For £10 (taken from credit or bought outright) you get 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data for the month. There are other goodybags too, see http://giffgaff.com/index/pricing for more.

If you get an existing user to recommend you, you get £5 free credit (and the existing user gets £5 too...) when you top up your first £10. Use http://giffgaff.com/orders/affiliate/jamjaw to get one of these sims (in the UK).

If anyone wants a sim, let me know and I will get one in the post to you (even if overseas - if this counts a touting and is therefore against the rules, let me know and I will edit post!).

Do you know if you can top-up using US credit card? Does it ask for billing address and if yes, can you enter any other country billing address but UK?

Only top up using uk card at the moment... However you can use vouchers (either o2 or giffgaff) to top up. These can be bought online and they email code for you to topup online through the website. No need for a billing address at all as they are pay as you go!

Do you have a link to purchase those vouchers?

Updated 19 Nov with another option

Carrefour Móvil has a great deal

SIM: 10€ in any Carrefour supermarket (including Carrefour Express), includes 5€ of credit. You want the data SIM, not the voice SIM. They sell them in the checkout line.

DATA TARIFFS:
1€/day unlimited data, billed per-day. If you only connect during one day (0h-2359h) you only pay 1€. Thus that SIM will keep you going for five days without a recharge. You get full HSPA data up to 100MB/day, then it drops to 128Mb/s.

1GB Pack - 19€, good for a 30-day period, unlimited data. Once you pass 1GB, speed is reduced to 128Mb/s. You can either re-up for another 1GB or switch to the 1€/day after that.

APN Settings:
apn: CARREFOURINTERNET
user: <blank>
password: <blank>

--------------------

Vodafone:

http://vodafone.es

SIM: 18€ in any Vodafone shop, includes 18€ of credit. There is a Vodafone shop every couple of blocks in the cities, and every small town has at least one.

DATA TARIFFS:
0,50€/day unlimited data - no P2P, no VOIP, consistent high volume gets you booted to their GPRS network at lower speed

3€/week unlimited data - same as above

IPAD SIM:
15€ includes 15€ of credit. VOIP works.

IPAD TARIFFS:
15€/month - 200MB, then speed drops to GPRS
32€/month - 2GB, then speed drops to GPRS

All Vodafone SIMs can be recharged in ATMs that have the "4b" logo.

APN SETTINGS:
APN: ac.vodafone.es
Username: vodafone
Password: vodafone

--------------------
Another option is Happy Móvil:

http://www.happymovil.es

SIM: 10€, available in any Phone House shop, also most other independent mobile shops.

DATA TARIFF:
0,09€/MB - EDGE speeds, billed in MB increments.

All Happy Móvil SIMs can be recharged in "la Caixa" ATMs. This may be an interesting option because they have extremely cheap international calls - around 0,06€/minute to much of the world - and calls between Happy Móvil numbers are always free.

APN SETTINGS:
APN: internet

I know. Following that link you get £5 free credit, whereas if you do not use the link you do not. Let me know if you want me to remove and I will!

Sri Lanka

Pre-paid 3G voice and data services available from two leading cell phone service providers in SL; (Dialog and Mobitel) with reasonable coverage island wide. But expect the data to switch to Edge from 3G/UMTS outside the main cities

http://mobitel.lk/broadband/3g_delight.html

http://www.dialog.lk/personal/broadb...aid-broadband/

They both have kiosks at the CMB airport arrivals lobby. (On your left as you leave the customs area.)

Both of them have micro-sims as well for iphone 4 /ipad but not sure about the availability at the airport kiosks.

The 0,50€/day rate seems to require signing up for a week and only gives 20mb/day at high speed:

Price: € 0.50 / day (0.59 € / day VAT *) (0.54 € with IPSI Ceuta, 0.52 € with IPSI Melilla). Only for prepaid customers. Minimum time in this rate is 7 consecutive days. Unlimited browsing, once daily exceeded 20MB download speeds drop to 128Kbps.

I can't find a 3€/week unlimited data rate, although there is a 3.5€/week blackberry plan that seems genuinely unlimited http://360.vodafone.es/TarifaPlana/t...kberrytarjeta/.

USA Prepaid 3G Data for IPad

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with the ATT 3G Data Pre-Paid plans for IPad? Can i just walk into an ATT store and ask for a micro-sim and then activate on the Ipad directly?

I have a 45 day trip to the US coming up and i definitely don't want to do roaming for that length of time!

Thank you for your help!
