Thoughts on a Lenovo X201?

I'm looking to replace my work computer. I've used a friend's X200 a couple of times and the lack of a touchpad bothered me. However with the X201 you have the option of adding a touchpad to the trackpoint and fingerprint reader. I'd likely pair it with the docking station and a 24" monitor at work but the small form factor would work well for carrying around.

The screen size would be a nice step up from the 10.1" screen I'm currently using and I sure could use the added screen real estate nowadays. I speced one out via our purchasing website with added RAM and larger hard drive and it came in at $2050.

I have options to purchase from Dell, HP or Apple as well.

I have been using an X300 for the last 2 years, upgraded the SSD to 128 GB (from the original 64GB) and Windows 7 Professional last Fall ... best damn laptop I've ever had. I've setup and used a co-worker's X301, it is even better (brighter screen, faster processor). So if budget permits, don't futz with the X20x, go X30x (with Windoze 7) instead!

Only thing better will be to run Windows 7 on the latest Macbook Pro. Another coworker did that a few months ago. You get to look cool along with the turtleneck crowd (even though it is a bit warm for that now) while using a real productive operating system

X200 user and everything you need from a rock-solid, reliable and effective travelling notebook resides in its case. Buy your X201 and be happy.

Once you get used to the trackpoint, touchpads will only infuriate you.

Personally, I have the predecessor - X61 and have used other X-models before it. Excellent biz sub-notebook.

i5/i7-based X201 is much faster than the X301 (ULV Core 2 Duo). If you want a thin, ULV 13" machine, the X301 is a pretty good option (although for a machine that large, I'd recommend a full-speed CPU rather than ULV).

That said, any modern 11.6"-12.1" system is going to be more portable and more usable in coach than any 13"-13.3" one, even a super-slim model like the X301/Macbook Air/Dell V13.

Not performance by any stretch of the imagination. An i5-520M (base processor on X201) is going to be more than twice as fast at CPU-intensive tasks than the SU9600 (top of the line processor on the X301).

Thumbs up

Have an x201 with an i7 - very happy with it thus far. Light and very powerful system.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to configure a x201s via our work portal. Unfortunately there's not a substantial 'pre-configured' discount on those yet so the final price tag will be over $2,000 it seems.

If it's your own money, I'd suggest looking at the plain X201 rather than the X201s. If it's company money, go for the lightest possible

Should be getting my X201 from IT this week (we were waiting for SSDs to come in).

Any X201 tips and tricks from the traveling masses? Power management settings? Must have accessories? Great Lenovo programs that should not be overlooked?

It's my money to spend but not "my" money so I'm trying to be a bit cost conscious because it is a limited pot. That being said I am going to opt for the lighter X201s. It simply makes the most sense.

Coff

Fresh format and install of Windows 7 is my suggestion - there's a lot of Lenovo-ware, little of it much use as far as I can see...

Yep, go for the X201s with SSD and 4 cell battery. Just tops 1kg (2.2lbs). Great screen, keyboard - all as good as it gets in my view. Only problem is I don't think the 201s is available right now and I have heard various stories about either the i7 chips not being available .. or the 1440x900 screen not being available .....

The 201s is not currently listed on Lenovo's site. The 201 can be configured with an 2.66 GHz i7, but the only screen choice is the WGA (1280x800), not the WGA+ (1440x900).

Ah that is relatively recent I think .. I guess that suggests it is the 1440x900 panels rather than the i7 chips they cannot get for the X201s which sort of makes sense since other makers are producing models with i7 chips in them.
