Hacking the iPad 3g for the UK?

I am finally going over to the dark side, and getting an iPad with 3G. I've been reading up on jailbreaking, and it doesn't seem like there is a solution yet for using other carriers' SIM cards with the iPad. Am I wrong about that? And, if so, are there any recommendations for good/cheap data plans for pay-as-you-go in the UK? Thanks!

yes. the ipad is unlocked. you just need a microsim (or cut a regular sim).

vodaphone, orange and o2 should be offering plans.

Do a google search - there are a few places selling adaptors, where you can use a micro-sim in a regular mini-sim phone.

Also, from theregister.co.uk

Ah, somehow I had missed that the iPad was unlocked - thanks. That makes my life much easier.

Orange has a MicroSIM with an iPad plan, but it may not be the best deal. Forty quid a month, but there are PAYG plans as well. Unless coverage is critical for you, I always thought that 3 had the best data deals. If you are taking your iPad abroad, obviously Voda has the data passport.

There is a die cutter for dual sim adapters which will cut a standard SIM into a MicroSIM. Search e-bay and you will find the same. I have no personal experience with this product (or company), but check out this link:

Lastly, while a little expensive, take a look at iPhonetrip.com's roaming SIM which they rent by the week for the iPad.

What happens if I buy the iPad in the States though then go to the UK and walk into a cellular shop and pick up a microSIM on a carrier with an iPad plan? Is the data adding process as simple as it is with ATT? Can I do everything I need to with just a credit card on my iPad?

My friend Pat at www.maxroam.com will be offering pre-pay micro-SIMs for the iPad in the next week or so - his products are designed for voice and data roaming worldwide...

All you need is a knife and then you can use the iPad with whomever you feel like.
