IPhone repair
 

My son just broke by Iphone 3g screen. Other than looks, it still seems to be working.

Any ideas on how to get it repaired?

If you are near an Apple Store, I believe that this is something that they can do right on site.

there was a thread here a few months back, search and it should come up.
I use a site for DIY ifixit.com. That gets you the parts and you DIY.

In the thread about this earlier, there was send away companies that charge about 50$ total for shipping and repair and then screen. Apple will I think charge 200$, but there ARE reports of if you go in, they MIGHT give you a new/refurb one, so it is worth a check.

Also, most can get the refurb from AT&T for 49-99$, but with contract extension.

I don't think they actually repair the same unit on site. They ask you if all your data is backed up, and then they go in back and bring out a new or refurb.

Beware that even a techie found it difficult to DIY.

Not if it's under warranty or if you have Apple Care

If your kid has jailbroken then don;t go to the apple store.

DH has had his screen replaced a few times. Most recently he just found some guy on craigslist. He tried it himself, but realized it's worth the money to pay someone with some experience.

I think he used Mission Repair once, but now he just gets it done locally.

If you have a little bit of interests in electronical-stuff and don't have two right hands you can easily do it by yourself.

Warranty/AppleCare is probably not going to cover repairs caused by misuse such as dropping the iPhone.

They didn't question me either time that I brought my iPhone in for physical repairs: once for a screen replacement and once for a silence/muting button replacement. The latter occurred as a result of dropping the device.

I needed to have my iPhone headset replaced because the button stopped working; even though the problem was with the headset they checked the iPhone - and when they saw it was jailbroken they went ahead and gave me a new headset even though I was told I'd technically violated the warranty by jailbreaking.

I'm not saying you'll never get Apple to service something you dropped, I'm just saying you shouldn't count on it. ;)
