Vista 64 LAN problem
Something happened... have a 64 bit Vista on a network and it will not get internet services. I show the internet connecting and it is transmitting and receiving, I can run AOL, but my firefox, IE, Chrome, even my Trend Micro security programs, yahoo chat, msn chat everything will not connect to internet in the LAN. Only AOL can get through.
Any clue why? |
Many possibilities, most of them malware. The things that come to mind first:
1) Check to see if any malware has messed with your HOSTS file. 2) Some malware install a proxy server. Check your browser settings. See if you can resolve addresses (DNS issue) by going to a command prompt and pinging somebody like yahoo.com - if it displays the IP address, your DNS is OK. After that, run a tool that catches Trojans better than most AV programs, like Malwarebytes. |
With similar problems I was advised to run in 32-bit mode and that did solve the problem. The same thing seems to be happening to MAC Snow Leopard also, solved frequently by running in 32-bit mode.

Our DNS works we can ping Yahoo however the Yahoo programs will not connect for whatever reason. Yahoo won't load the browser or YM. Neither will IE or Firefox or Chrome.... Only AOL will connect through...:confused::confused: |

Only AOL will connect through...:confused::confused: It reeks of malware in a bad way. Do you have another computer that is working? It appears so since you are able to connect to post. Try HiJack This and see what else is running on your system. |

Ping just means that DNS is returning some results and that the server in question is online. There could still be something in the way that is preventing HTTP traffic from getting where it wants to go.

UM... so you folks know, I'm not cheap, I'd gladly pay for repair but I'm on an island that has no services. So thank you very much. My next step is to carry this on my next business trip to get fixed... So I do appreciate the help... |
OK I ran it.. now what am I looking for :D

Have you checked the proxy settings?
Are you using DHCP or is the IP address static? Finally you could always reload the OS. |

KosraeTV - Try turning off your firewall for a few moments to see if that makes any difference. Did you try running the network troubleshooter? Other things to try: 1) Removing/re-adding the network connection (in the network control panel; I don't have vista so I don't recall the exact steps) 2) Powering off the machine completely and leaving it off for a few minutes, then powering on again 3) Powering the router off/on. 4) Powering the cable/DSL modem off/on. |

I went through 99% of the suggestions already and I was even suspecting it is with a possible Trend Micro issue (some little flip or switch with that AV software blocking things) and have uninstalled that but no luck with that either also. Have identical machines also, so I've gone setting by setting and they are identical settings that I see. So I've got a call back into Trend Micro and am doing everything all over step by step. I even took out the Lan board (whatever you call it) and swapped those and same item so even though I had network activity I can rule out hardware... The joy of living in the islands is the do it yourself spirit you gotta have.... But it also wants to make me shoot myself at times :D |
Pls Open a cmd window and issue the following command and post it.
You may not have a valid default gateway or dns server ip addr from the output. click on windows start -> run -> cmd ... you will get a dos/cmd window ... ipconfig /all You can also issue the following 2 cmds to reset the network ipconfig /release wait 30 secs ipconfig /renew Another test is to ping a known ip address like www.yahoo.com from the cmd window and if you have a good connection it should look like below C:\ ping www.yahoo.com Pinging any-fp.wa1.b.yahoo.com [69.147.125.65] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 69.147.125.65: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=51 Reply from 69.147.125.65: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=51 Reply from 69.147.125.65: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=51 Reply from 69.147.125.65: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=51 Ping statistics for 69.147.125.65: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 15ms, Maximum = 19ms, Average = 16ms |
ping has always worked... I did the commands and nothing came up that was strange all was normal.

You can check for a proxy server with
Code:
C:\>netsh diag connect ieproxy |
Thanks folks we got it to work ultimately. It was a combination of items. Some of what a fwe of you posted along with a fwe tweeks here and there got it up and running.
Thanks so much and SBM12 thanks for the offer but we are on a slow speed due to the islands it would have been impossible but it was a generous offer. Kulo Ma Lulap / Salamat / Khorp Khun Krap / Mahalo / Thank you..... |
