Cheapest reliable online place for Apple memory
An out-of-country friend asked me to buy her some memory for her laptop - I know nothing about Apple so I thought I'd ask here.
Thanks. |
I bought mine in the past from Amazon.com, buy.com, newegg.com
|
Two popular sites are newegg.com and macsales.com. The brand of memory is of great importance. In discussions.apple.com forums Crucial is often mentioned as a preferred choice. But, I'm not an expert and the best brand may be dependent on the particular hardware needing the memory. (I recently purchased and installed some Crucial memory from Newegg and had no issues.).

I've bought from zipzoomfly.com, kingston.com, buy.com and others. I have never had a problem with anything in the past 4-5 years, matching stick for stick with same memory footprint and company. I usually just do a search on those sites, or slickdeals or fatwallet for the memory type one needs. pc5300 ddr3, 667hz, 1ghz, 1GB, 2GB, etc. I don't think you can go wrong with the lower priced sites. BTW, I buy almost everything at Amazon including TEA, but for memory they have never for me at least proven to be the cheapest for the same memory from the same manufacturer
|
Not that it makes any difference but when I upgraded I decided to use Crucial as that was what Apple was apparently using as OEM memory at the time. I checked prices at the Crucial website and then pricing at other Internet etailers. I found the best price at the time from buy.com.

Go to Crucial.com and use their configuration tool to get the specs of the memory you need. Then go to Newegg or wherever you normally buy PC memory and make sure you get something equivalent. I usually stick with Kingston, Crucial, or Corsair brands but there are other good ones.

Thanks, everyone. Crucial, with a 5% coupon I found online, was the best overall price. They charge sales tax, but it was almost a wash, and there is free shipping.
|
I have purchased from 1-800-memory at least a dozen times. They seem to have the best prices. Another good resource is ramseeker.
|
I use crucial.com to check for exact specs, then shop at either amazon.com or newegg.com. Usually amazon is slightly less - no sale tax and if more than $25, free shipping.
|
I've purchased from Crucial and have been pleased with the quickness of the service and the price.
26 Feb - added I have also used http://www.memorysuppliers.com/ with the same satisfaction as Crucial. |
One vote for Kingston here. Took my Blackbook from 2 to 4 gigs.

Adding/replacing Mac laptop memory can be a bit of a pain.
Found U-Tube videos really helpful on this. |
