Video via USB
 

Recently flew DXB-LHR in business with Emirates on a 777-300. Despite the huge choice of inflight entertainment, there were a few particular films and programmes I wanted to watch so I took my own portable DVD player. I was really impressed, however, with the size of the seat's screen (much bigger than my DVD player's) and the cabin crew informed me that you can connect devices via USB.

I've searched the internet quiite thoroughly but have not been able to determine whether you can watch video this way, either directly from storage media or using a cable to connect a device such as a DVD player.

Can anyone please advise.

I noticed that the newer Korean Air aircraft also have a usb port located next to the backseat video screen. Although the ports aren't yet operative, I believe that the KE website says that their purpose is for the recharging of devices.

Highly unlikely. Its for charging small devices via USB.

No it isn't.

At the moment, the system only supports music and photos off any USB device, in the future it will support video, but formats are obviously a bit of an issue.

The new BA F has a phono input so that you can watch your stuff on the screen if your product has a phono out or you have bought a converter, plus USB.

Thankfully that is going to show up more often in the future, along with the Panasonic exPort video cable made by Griffin. Of course, that will mean you'll need a new $40 cable...

I've realised that I have a converter at home VGA>Phono (USB powered) but it's the size of a small paperback and I'm not sure about adding that to the already huge bag of electronics that counts as my hand luggage, however it would work with my netbook.

Having looked at the Panasonic exPort video cable online I've realised where I've seen that type of port before. The CO guys at the Business Travel Show told me that you could hook your own video up to the IFE screen and then they couldn't work out where you could do that. After we had discussed the other seat features I asked what the port was at the bottom left of the screen that I could see. They then looked at where I was pointing at and said in a moment of (light bulbs going on and) realisation "that's it that's the video port" but had no idea about what went into it.
