Free Wifi From Google
Figured you all should know about this seeing as it was announced today! :D

I noticed this too. One part that seems a bit strange is that MCO already has free wi-fi, so the users won't get anything for free that they are not already getting, they will just get some extra spam to go with it.

This is a nice gesture from Google IMO. Many airports don’t offer free WiFi including several I traveled through this week.
So to save the $10 or so that it would cost to log-in to a WiFi network at an airport, I'm willing to deal with a message or two from Google. |
For those complaining, I just want to point out that there is also a rather large charity aspect connected to the promotion.

I was in the AA Admirals Club at SJC and saw workers putting up the free Google wifi banners on the side of the parking garage. At the same time, I noticed the free SJC wifi was not working. Coincidence? Perhaps Google will be taking over management of the wifi network.
I am happy to see Boston finally getting free wifi. Boston always seems to feel like the "me too" kid when it comes to innovation. The city wants to seem like Hollywood but goes gaga over B-list celebs like a tourist in LA. The city wants to be like Silicon Valley but falls short on tech innovation. The city wants to be a financial center like Wall Street but financial companies are fleeing the city. A real shame. |
Goggle never does anything for free or without a good reason - I wonder what it could be? :D

Complaining? All I was pointing out is that what Google calls a gift of free WiFi at LAS was already free for everyone. The quote from that press release you linked to is rather bizarre: "As a pioneer in providing complimentary Wi-Fi to airport customers, we are very excited about Google partnering with McCarran International along with other airports across the country to bring holiday cheer to so many travelers," said Rosemary A. Vassiliadis, Deputy Director, Clark County Department of Aviation What exactly are they partnering with Google for? Or did they (McCarran) take free WiFi away recently? |

one doesn't have to download anything for this promo, but it is such a relatively obscure set of airports.

Not sure if the airport list is what they chose or what they got. I'm hoping it's a precursor to their subsidizing free WiFi nationwide. Wouldn't surprise me one bit considering their history with Gmail and the like. Google or not, at some point in the not-too-distant future, WiFi is going to be ubiquitous and "free" as is radio and network TV. It'll be ad supported. |
