Two weeks in Asia with a 22" roller?

Hey all,

Leaving in a few weeks for a 2 week trip in Asia. I'll be changing cities every 3 days or so, so I'm trying to do it with only a laptop bag and a carry-on. I figure if I get a laundry service once, I should be able to make it through the trip.

Am I being foolish/naive in just going with a 22" roller?

Big Continent ASIA..It depends on how many different climates and temperatures you are likely to encounter.

It is possible.... if you wear the same thing for several days.... :)

One solution is to take clothes that you are ready to get rid of any way.... wear them, and then throw them away... but then buy some new clothes over there to bring back..... :)

Like the previous posters said, where in Asia are you going?
Asia is a big continent and climate do vary by the region.

Also depends on how you are getting around and all that. When we were in china for example, the weight limits on bags was insanly low, only one checked bag, not over 44 lbs. So it's possible you may be limited to just one bag.

I'm a huge fan of the wear and toss stuff on a trip like that, especially for underware, socks, etc. Frees up some space for stuff to bring back. There are times I feel if they looked in the suitcase on the trip home they would wonder if I changed at all as sometimes not much is left.

Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo. The weather in Bangkok will obviously be very different than in China and Japan.

Flying ANA for most of the trip, Egypt Air for one of the legs. I'll literally have clothes, my camera and a laptop so I don't think weight limits should be an issue for me.

Those are tropical and humid cities. Weather won't be much different between them. You don't need warm clothes for the summer, a light jacket/windstopper might be good.

Not sure whether you are traveling for leisure or business. You will be in 4 cities in 14 days don't need to bring lot of clothes so 3-4 set of clothes should be adequate. Clothes are inexpensive in Bangkok, Shanghai and Beijing.

You didn't mention whether you are male or female so clothing needs will be very different

Try to to search the web for "travel packing list" etc.

Thanks for the link. I'm a guy and Thailand will be for vacation and the rest of the trip will be for work. However, work is casual for me so jeans/polo shirt will be fine.

Based on past packing experience, I think I should be able to get 4-5 outfits in a carry-on.

Check out stores like www.rei.com and www.mec.ca where they sell light weight anf fast drying clothes (in case you need to wash them by hand).

As I said in my previous post, clothes are cheap in Thailand and China so you could pick up as you go. They will serve as good souvenirs.

Be conscious to dress appropriately for certain temples in Bangkok and Tokyo.

Anyone contemplating carry-on only travel for the first time should review the material at www.onebag.com to see if it's feasible. I'd have no problems with two week trips with just a single carry-on and plan on doing so this summer.

When I traveled more, I routinely did a month with an 18 inch roller and a shoulder bag. It's a trade off. You carry less, which for me was really nice, but you also tend to always be doing laundry. It's easier if you're in one or two places for a longer period, but it's a pain in the neck if you're hopping from place to place.

Not at all. I always travel with just a 20" roller and a laptop bag -- even on 2-week international trips. Just be prepared to do laundry 1 to 3 times during the trip. (I use hotel laundry services on trips like that.)

I did two and a half weeks in Thailand with a 22" and a carry-on. It's definitely do-able if you limit shoes (one pair for walking, flip-flops for the beach/pool) and have your laundry sent out at least once along the way (it's pretty cheap in most of Asia).

I also used super-lightweight fast-drying tropics pants from Travelsmith, which took up much less space in my bag and I could rinse out every night and have dry by morning.

My 22" was expandable, and despite discarding some clothes along the way I filled it with enough gifts that I had to expand and check it on the return. I also sent a package home from Bangkok (with gifts and a pair of shoes I had taken with me but wasn't using much); the hotel was happy to box and mail it for me and I recall the postage being quite reasonable.
