I'm going to terms with the fact that I must go to a rolling carry-on bag - probably a duffel - and the problem I am having is that a lot of space gets taken up by my leather jacket. OK, this is something that I could simply wear anywhere inside - and is no problem if I'm flying from a cold climate/time to another, but would be problematic for when it's warmer - or even wrap around my waist, but I'd like the ability to just put it into a rather flat bag, and simply have that bag fit under the duffel straps. The idea situation would be a small bag that can be secured somehow on the bag with a clip as well.

The beauty of this system is that it I get to an anal-retentive gate agent, I could simply wear the jacket, and put into the luggage compartment, while still having the ability to have a more or less integrated bag that has the jacket.

And ideas?

A plastic bag would not do, but a canvas bag shaped like rectangle might do; I might be able to get someone on Etsy make me one.

Flat rectangle - like some of the packing cubes? A couple of mine have straps too. Or an appropriately sized stuff sac - don't need to compress but the option is there?

I've been traveling with a chico bag (non zippered) since about 2013. The original is smaller and can hold a jacket and other items. I tie up the straps to my rollerbag if I need to carry it that way. But, I didn't even know they made this zippered one. I would recommend something like this or the original chico bag. Best travel bags in my opinion and at least I can attest to the fact the original is basically water resistant. I've had groceries in it and spilled liquids fail to seep through after mishaps.

That's a good recommendation, but it only has one purpose. I think the OP should get something that can be used at least to possibly carry other items like when going through security, which is why I use my chico bag all the time for everything😁 But, for simplicity that strap is spot-on👍
