Trunk luggage?
Getting back into travelling again after a long extended time off! My BA gold has miraculously been continually extended whilst I haven’t travelled!
Time I needed a luggage refresh. I have been intrigued by trunk shaped luggage. I am passing through Asia and noticed the Lojel fit. Looks nice and the price is reasonable. Never had a trunk before. What are people’s thoughts on this form factor? is it advantageous? Or just a gimmick and should I stick to just getting a large suitcase? I need to buy two so I guess I could get a large and a trunk? Any experience and thoughts gratefully appreciated. thanks |
I'm a fan of the trunk shape because it's useful for a wide variety of item shapes and packs more easily ime. I often use my trunk for 30+ day trips and fit my travel gym, plenty of shoes, and clothes without breaking 22 kg.
The down fall for me of most hardshell designs is their relative back of depth, making odd shaped items like art or protein powder or just shoes hard to pack. Also since many hardshells open 50/50 and feature fixed dividers, it's hard to efficiently use all the space they offer. Here the trunk shape wins again, as many have a flexible divider system allowing the items on one side to be packed into the other. I also think hardshell trunks perform better with regard to bumps and impacts due to having only 1 long dimension instead of the usual 2. That said, I've handed lojel fairly often in the past and find they have good designs and seem pretty durable. When I bought my trunk, I considered lojel, legend Walker, Briggs and Riley, and rimowa. Ultimately, I did go with rimowa because I liked the internals best. ETA: I totally forgot the absolute best part about trunks - they fit in compact cars and taxis. |
My regular bag for checking is an Eagle Creek (RIP) rolling duffel that is similar in configuration, but soft-sided and not quite as large as the Fit.

I like trunks.
You're more likely to encounter items that are too tall for regular large suitcases than things that are too long length or width wise for trunks. Trunks are also closer to being cubical, which means you're getting more volume while having the same length + width + height total compared to regular large suitcases. |
