Bigger suitcase with replaceable wheels suggestions?
Hello all!
Hoping to get some suggestions from you fine folks. I've recently been able to up treat myself and one thing I've been considering to get is a new suitcase. I have a 30" from some company with a seahorse logo I had to pick up in a pinch a few years ago and a 26" from heys. While both are technically still "useable", both have had the wheels replaced in the same spot (what can I say, the bigger the suitcase the more wine to put in) by the manufacturers, but was told by both that they only would do it as a 1 time thing and they also wouldn't sell me extra parts sadly. Anyways, this brings me to the present. While the suitcases do "work", I have a feeling it might be best to be proactive and get a new bigger suitcase sooner than later as opposed to hauling it with 3 wheels uphill with cobblestone steps in Spain, but I digress. While I do prefer hardshell suitcases, the massive wheels off this one from MEC caught my eye in store, but they don't sell the rollerblade like wheels separately (staff at the time said they weren't sure where to get the wheels but they do look to be user replaceable) and even they admit on their website that the 125L beast is likely too big to be able to be checked: MEC Convoy Roller 2 - Unisex While I wouldn't say I have a set "budget", I also don't really want to spend $3k on a suitcase. For that price it better stand a direct nuclear blast! Anyways, I'm open to suggestions. Function over fashion. I've only seen the Tumi's when travelling in Europe and killing time in the airports but it's always been the smaller cabin sized ones, which I don't need. My current Heys is still going after over 10 years! Thanks in advance! |
Have you looked at Osprey products? See https://www.osprey.com/us/en/product...90F21_369.html

No I have not actually, but seems they only ship parts if you're in the US sadly.
While I'd still prefer a hardshell suitcase, I'll still have a look at them (Osprey) next time I see it in store though. |
I've mentioned them before on this forum, but check out Lojel. I've got two of thier carry on voja pieces and recently bought one of the large ones. We absolutly LOVE the carry on. The large one is just as good, just quite large, what you're looking for I gather. Now...we did have an issue with the wheels on the large one, but I honestly think it was either the airline being carless with the heavy bag, or a one off from the manufacture. Either way we had absolutly fantastic customer service with Lojel, albiet only through e-mail. When we got home I just made sure to buy some extra screws to pack along incase we had an issue again.
The way the Voja bag closes is just so superb to anything out here it is worth anything and everything. It really is a good bag. |
I have an Ogio Terminal bag for my larger heavy duty trips. I have pulled that thing over some really bad roads and stairs loaded with hiking and rock climbing gear and never had an issue. The wheels are replaceable with standard rollerblade wheels. Ogio will send you new ones. The one I have is pretty ugly and have had it for about 10 years it does the job great for those times I need something for gear and don't want to lug a North Face Basecamp duffle around. The quality has been good for the price and their customer service has been great. We love our new Rimowa luggage but this thing has been a workhorse for me over the years.

My only concern is the weight. It's a heavy suitcase! Doesn't seem to be available in Canada and while I do plan on going to San Francisco to visit my sister, that's a few months away. Still, it does look nice though... Also, I'm really liking the Urbo travel backback though. I've been considering getting a back travel packpack as the one I use now doesn't fit too much. I think might fit the case...

https://www.ogio.com/travel/terminal...pr4705224.html Free shipping is nice and while I could ship it to my sister in California, I can't really use it anytime soon. The big benefit of the MEC bag though is that I can repair the wheels using a hexagonal ikea tool and then just getting a tire from a skateboard shop. While I'm trying to consider all option, is Rimowa worth looking into? Although they seem to be on the heavier side... |
