Travel Health Insurance

Hello. I have a 3 week trip to Europe (multiple countries) coming up and am interested in suggestions for companies offering travel health insurance. Most of the non-health coverages on my CSR are sufficient, but that card only offers pre-approved evacuation (not terribly useful in a life threatening situation) and emergent care. Health insurance only covers emergency room visits and evacuation, not other treatment or hospitalization.

In other threads, I saw recommendations for AIG TravelGuard and World Nomads, and recommendations against insuremytrip. Just curious what others have used. I'm not expecting to use it, but I'm also not 22 any more. Any recommendations are welcomed.

To the moderator: sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I saw other threads in travel products and under specific airlines. Please move as needed.

Thank you.

One note on insuremytrip.com - they're just an aggregator/reseller, not an actual insurance provider (most major insurance providers are available though). It's the insurer itself and their plan specifics that you want to look into, really. I've found it a handy site for comparison, whether or not I ultimately bought through them. There are other resellers out there, too.

I don't have any good advice on specifics, though, as I've so far never needed medical care while abroad (and my insurance plan actually does cover me just like it does at home, except for the need for me to prepay and then file for reimbursement). The frustrating thing about finding good reviews is that, IME, a lot of reviews of travel insurance are not from people who needed to file claims. For example Insuremytrip.com has user reviews but I find most are just addressing the user's satisfaction with the process of purchasing the plan.

Squaremouth (https://www.squaremouth.com/) is another site that can be helpful to search and compare different providers.

I use insuremytrip.com for all "big" vacations. Three years ago I broke my ankle 8 days before a French Polynesia cruise & the insurance carrier I picked paid the $11k loss within three weeks without a lot of hassle. You have to look carefully at the carrier and benefits you are picking (I always look at the carrier reviews from those who filed claims). I like the way insuremytrip.com lets you compare at policy benefits side by side from different carriers.

I've been researching the past few days - it's such a pain in the .... And I have an MPH - I've studied insurance in school, have worked in hospitals and read journal articles about this stuff, I read my own plan documents every year. I can't imagine how people who don't understand these details make this decision ;-)

First we have to decide if we want trip insurance AND medical, or just medical. A little worried about aging parents, not ourselves needing to cancel a trip. But most of the medical coverage seems the same, and similarly priced. So the details really do matter.....Back to reading certificates!

[right now I'm leaning slightly toward Global Underwriters Diplomat international - I've been using insuremytrip as an aggregator to compare various plans]

I subscribe to the Trekker Choice annual plan from GeoBlue Travel Insurance, but never had to use it.

I leave the trip insurance part to the credit cards.

I'd seen GeoBlue Trekker a few times here - I think I'd use that if I had multiple international trips planned this year. Right now, just one. But next year.....

I ended up going with GeoBlue though I did the one-time policy for about $70. I can't imagine needing $1M in health coverage, but then again, you buy insurance for the things you can't imagine. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
