Petite one-bagger transitioning from backpack to wheels
Last week I had surgery to remove some lymph nodes from my armpit (along with other stuff), and although I'll make a full recovery, I'll have a small risk of lymphedema (arm swelling) going forward. I have been a staunch - nay, militant - one-bagger, but I think I should consider what to do if I can't backpack on my October Japan trip or other trips in the future. I'm 4'10" tall and my current bag is a Timbuk2 Wingman convertible pack, 19x12x6.5" and 1.9lbs.; it fits under coach seats, so I don't have to stand on my seat to get it in the overhead bin. For coach use, would you recommend any of the sub-5 lb. roller bags below, or another bag I've missed? I thought wheeled backpacks would be light, but I'm finding that unstructured 2-wheel luggage is lighter.

Not cheap though as it is around $200+ shipping. But could be of interest to you as a day pack for daily activities on your trip (can carry 10 liters). I do not know tough if they deliver to your location but you can see that if you try to check out on their site. So my recommendation would be to go for a regular carry on spinner for your air travel but use the CoXa as a secondary bag to be used as a day pack while moving around at your destination. |
I'm the same height as you and have just been using no-brand rolling backpacks marketed for students or for laptops, such as

Hi; hope you are feeling much better. One suggestion I have about bags is to consider a non-rolling bag and a separate luggage cart. I love Red Oxx's XS Aviator bag. It's 15 x 11 x 8 inches of pure packing space. I have one and it holds A LOT! I also have a Samsonite luggage cart and it is very light weight and folds quite small. You could stash the folded cart in the overhead easily with one hand and put the XS Aviator underseat. Any underseat bag with wheels and a handle is going to have less packing space. This way, you get more packing space and still roll your bag.

The search continues.
I usually fly in F/C but even there overhead bin space is limited and the items you need are out of reach. I really want a rolling bag for under my seat on any airplane. Probably about 14x14x6" deep wheels included. I don't want to use the overhead bins. I want basically a purse on wheels.
I have tried the Travelon quilted so-called underseater and it is way too deep at 9.5"with wheels. I ordered the Bric's underseat rolling tote and sent it right back because the online measurement said 5.1 " depth and it was 8". A separate folding cart is an option but I used them all through the 1970's until wheeled bags came out. The carts are quite long even folded up, prone to breakage, and bag slippage. I do, however appreciate everyone's suggestions on here. I am now considering the Victorinox wheeled tote at 7.5" depth. Let's hope some manufacturer designs a small underseat wheeled bag that they actually road test and measure accurately. |
Thank you all for your suggestions! I'm leaning toward a small folding cart with modifications so that I can quickly and easily attach my Timbuk2 to it, since I feel I have the perfect bag for me already. But the CoxaCarry pack looks great for hiking.

titaniumfemme, I'd be very interested if that works, and your thoughts on that Eagle Creek bag in particular. There are times it would be ice to roll my A45, but none of the the rolling bags I've looked at have been very appealing: the bags seem either too bulky or are just poorly designed. (This is after close study of this thread.) Fingers crossed your bag solves this dilemma!

I bought that bag (in black) to pair with my Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 -- the idea is to roll the A45 around on the Eagle Creek while walking the airport. When I arrive on the plane, I'll put the A45 in the overhead bin (easy fit) and slip the Eagle Creek under the seat. I'll test that theory next week and report back. It looks to me like it should work -- I'm pretty sure I've put tote bags and purses bigger than the EC under the seat in front of me in the past.

I'm looking for a tote that I can put on top of a larger rolling bag when I plan to check the latter, then roll the tote through to the gate. How amenable is that Eagle Creek to perching on top of something else?

Thank you so much for checking that out. :)

Good suggestions. I am in a similar position. I have used my Campmor Essential Carry-on for years, but I don't think my health will allow me to wear it around the airport and on the walk to the hotel. I will check out my luggage carrier tonight. Thanks.

I've been looking for a "rolling tote" with about the same measurements as your "purse on wheels." I don't think it exists. I've already bought and returned half a dozen things because IRL they're a lot bigger than their advertised measurements...some are so big they don't even meet carry-on sizing. I'm currently eyeing this. http://www.travelsmith.com/eagle-cre...el-tote/583954

Hi, I just recieved the Victorinox Werks 5.0 spinner tote. It measures 15" tall, 13" wide, and most crucially 7.5" deep. This one looks like it will easily slide under the seat. Great quality overall.
