Performance "Threads" Thread
 

I think it's time we started a thread for "performance" clothing for travel. On other threads, people have said they like bluffworks pants. Let's start a thread to talk about other lightweight easy care products that they use for travel.

Personally, because I travel a lot in Europe where they often have an 8Kg limit on luggage weight, I try to go for lightweight stuff.

For example, in August, I wanted to try cutting down on the luggage weight and volume by getting rid of cotton underwear/undershirts in favor of something synthetic - also with the hope that it would be more washable on the road, I bought a few undershirts and underpants from ex-officio, http://www.exofficio.com/products/de...eck-tshirt-S14

and while found them to be lightweight and easily washable, either the shirts shrunk or are just cut too short as they kept un-tucking themselves from my pants.

In December, I discovered "Airism" from Uniqlo:

Which I have found to be both lighter and more comfortable (and much cheaper) so I ditched the ex-officio stuff.

I also bought at Uniqlo an "ultra light down" parka http://www.uniqlo.com/us/men/outerwe...ight-down.html Which has been great and amazingly light.

I'm interested to hear from the group what other travel clothing you recommend!

The only clothes I have specifically purchased for travel are ExOfficio underwear. That Vneck T you linked is a little deep for me and makes me think of an old SNL skit. The price is right though. The only other specific clothing I use are compression stockings which I wear all the time but a lot of people are interested in for air travel due to leg swelling. Nabee makes comfortable compression socks that are stylish and reasonably priced as far as compression goes. They are synthetic material so dry relatively quickly.

Uniqlo - the Airism (for women) is somewhat see through so can only be worn under another layer. But I like them and they're very affordable. Love the Heattech too - my husband loves the turtlenecks and I love the long sleeve crew necks for women. And the heattech tights!

Love merino wool (icebreaker, smartwool - whatever other items I find at Costco or on Sierra Trading Post).

Husband loves Levi Commuter pants (slim dungaree and the carpenter pant) Very water resistant but still cotton. For very VERY water resistant and a little dressier, the Outlier trousers (the ones with Schoeller fabric). I also have some pants in Schoeller fabric - love it! I'd probably not pay full price but I found mine at a thrift store for $5. Massive score :p

(when we travel for leisure, we seem to go to wet/cold places, like northern Europe in Nov or Dec - so water resistant is pretty important to us - I also like quick dry when I travel for work in case I need to wash something in the hotel)

I thought the V was a little deep at first too but Mrs. NYTA likes the Airism shirts (they are a little more form-fitting than my prior shirts and very soft to the touch so that may have something to do with it) but also I have a few non-business "going out" button down shirts that I wear that would look too nerdy to button to the second to last button and with the Airism I can wear it underneath and the deeper V means it stays invisible and I still don't look like a "wild and crazy Czechoslovakian guy".

The two products I have yet to find are nice, lightweight slip-on dress shoes that are comfortable (and come in narrow sizes) and synthetic or somehow wicking black non-compression socks. These were light http://www.clarksusa.com/us/mens/men...her/p/26025875 but not very comfortable so I went back to my old school Allen Edmonds loafers.

At the suggestion of another poster on another board I tried wigwam black sock "liners" as actual socks which were sort of comfy but don't look very good so I gave them up quickly and went back to my cotton gold-toes.

I've been trying to shift a lot of my clothing to merino wool. The temperature regulation and anti-odor properties make it great for travel. Most of it is very lightweight but during winter I do carry heavyweight merino socks (which allow me to get rid of waterproof boots).

I have tried exofficio and found them quite good

I have not tried uniqlo and wondered if anyone had direct experience of the full cut regular white underpants (briefs) and how they compare to ex officio
