JCinPA,
I agree there's diminishing returns with ultra-premium bags. The warranties are top notch, but I'm inclined to think the quality isn't much greater, there's just an extended warranty baked into the original purchase price.
I was wondering about this myself but couldn't find any and trying to find out the same thing. Mind if I ask how you were able to confirm this?

Yeah I had a Tumi which lasted only a few years before it needed repairs.
I replaced it with a $75 suitcase which is not nearly as sturdy, though it may last at least as long.
But I chose it partly because it's like 8 pounds for a 28-inch roller. It's going to get dirtied going through all the conveyor belts. But I don't mind nearly as much as having a $700 suitcase go through them.
