securing a backpack carryon and laptop

I'm looking for a setup to secure my backpack carryon and laptop while staying in a hotel.

The web is full of gadgets for travel security, but I'd be interested in "field tested" items and methods.

Pacsafe has a "Travelsafe 12L anti-theft portable safe" which seems like it could hold a laptop and additional items. Any experience with it?.

TIA,
Mike

When backpacking through Europe, my buddy had a stainless steel net made for this. It actually stretched out pretty big and we could fit two packs in it. It wasn't full proof but prevented easy/quick pilfering. Quite useful for some of the places we slept.

At a hotel, they usually have safes in the room?

If not lock your computer in a bag, and bring a cable lock and lock the bag to something solid?

Thanks for the replies.

From my experience, hotel safe box/deposit box are too small to accmmodate a laptop or even a 10" netbook.

Bags can be easily cut, so it's not that secure.

I've usually been able to put my 15 inch laptop and a 13 inch macbook air, along with a SLR into the safe in the hotel..

altho the safe size do vary..

They are kind of pricy, but there are 4 sizes available, they are made by Pacsafe: Pacsafe Anti-Theft Bag and Backpack Protector

I've travelled extensively in Europe in Asia, and have never come across a hotel safe which could accommodate anything wider than a passport wallet (the elongated ones which also carry the boarding pass).

I was looking at the pacsafe 12L or the pacsafe infosafe. any experience with these?

That's it. I remember now.

I used the pacsafe portable safe while traveling through southeast asia and most of Europe, and the only problem I found with it was difficulty finding something secure to lock it to. I did feel more secure with my valuables in the pacsafe rather then the hotel safe, which we've had problems with before. If doing it again I'd probably go with the mesh-style bag protectors though.

One time when sleeping outside at a closed train station in the middle of nowhere (long story) my friend ran the cable through his belt. Not likely some could run off with it while we were asleep.
