Are spinners worth it?

I have been using the traditional roll-on for over 20 years. Lately I have seen more and more folks using spinners. Sometimes they look better and sometimes it seems they could be a hassle.

Are the worth it? What's the big advantage?

Thanks

I suggest you do a search as there have been multiple threads with the same subject.

Spinners always look and feel better.

I use nothing but spinners these days for one simple reason, I can walk normally without slamming my heals into the bag on every step.

I'm 1.98m (6'5") and thus have fairly long legs. If you are shorter, like my wife, it doesn't seem to matter.

It is about hubcaps.

Definitely not what I think of when I hear the word spinners.

Do you pull it directly behind you or something? I'm having a hard time picturing this issue.

my only beef with spinners is if/when you have to book it between gates on a tight connection it seems a bit harder to tow behind or to the side of you if you are jogging. I find a standard 2 wheel config easier to run with. other than that they are nice for normal operation.

Spinners do tend to have slightly less room in the overhead bins. I.E. You can't flip it over and make it fit. Plus it's two more wheels that can break... JMHO.

In the case of regular two-wheel carry-ons, yes. With spinners, I just push them next to me and have no issues.

I've got a samsonite spinner that I'm very happy with. A little tough on carpets but tile and hard floors are a breeze.

Just used my new spinner on my latest trip to Europe.

Pros:

Don't have to pull bag behind you, it stays upright and you just push it along in front of you, easier on the hands and shoulders.

It doesn't get caught on the seats in the airplane aisle because you can push it sideways.

Cons:

The wheels are smaller and a little tough to maneuver on the cobblestone streets of Europe. Upon arrival, walked the 4 blocks from train station to hotel, was worried the wheels would break and because of the small wheels, it didn't roll very well. Upon my return, I actually paid for a cab to take me the short distance from hotel to train station.

Overall, I like it though. It's a 21" American Tourister Meridian Lite I bought in Walmart for $53. It had a few cosmetic flaws and the manager knocked the price down from $59. I just wonder how long the little wheels will hold out.
