Tom Bihn convertible packing cube/backpack
 

Has anyone tried the Tom Bihn packing cubes that turn into a backpack? Are they sturdy enough for light day use to carry an SLR and perhaps a 15" laptop?

I haven't tried this prodcut so I can't answer your questions...but if you're in a hurry to find some feedback their website has a great forum.

There are links for "Questions about bags? and "Bag reviews" as well - I'm sure these questions have come up before. They are also very good at participating in the forums with answers and even making modifications to their products based on customer feedback.

I have a Tristar and it works great!! I pretty much had all my questions answered on the forum before going ahead and purchasing the bag.

Yes, but you'd need some padding, the material, while strong, is not very thick. Wrap a shirt or something around your stuff, and it should be just fine.

Consensus seems to be that the material is strong but offers no protection so that the camera and gear will need to be protected if inside. This is probably what I was really concerned about.

(Note: some of those reviews were for the shoulder bag cube or the Aeronaut PCBP but the material and principal will be the same)

I have this for my Aeronaut and it works great provided that you don't want to carry something fragile, unprotected paper documents (OK in a portfolio), or something "pokey" that will poke you through the thin fabric.

I ran across these and they look great. I'm not interested in buying the Bihn luggage but do want packing cubes anyway. Any idea what size/version would work best when packing a Briggs & Riley 20" widebody roller? Thanks in advance.
