It is caused by a drop in pressure, causing the water to freeze. Similar to the vapor seen in engine nacelles during take off on humid days:

You will have a full explanation to this phenomena if you do a search of 'contrail' in wikipedia.

Or, as rkkwan said in his post; brief and to the point.

Contrails usually refer to the condensation caused by the engine exhaust. See my reply above.

It also give a brief explanation of Wingtip vortices, it give an answer in the end, its sort of all roads leads to Rome

I feel compelled to commend you on your choice of cropping, too--as ConciergeMike said, it almost looks like a rendering or screenshot out of a flight sim. The full-frame photo loses that effect, so your cropping job really brings out the picture!
