Here's an image I took around 1970 in New York City, rendered in B & W due to color shifts on the slide from which it was scanned.
The buildings' "stepped-back" facades are due to a 1916 zoning law that required designs that allowed more sunlight to penetrate to street level. It was quite a brilliant move IMO.
