Smugmug buys Flickr

I just came across this:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/...ath/537377002/

How would this affect your photographic life?

It did affect me, as I never used Flickr and am using Smugmug.

Interesting. I'm fine with what's reported - leave them independent and fix Flickr. Just don't break SM - I've been using it for over a decade.

I was thinking of changing from Flickr to Smugmug. I may wait a bit to see what they do with Flickr now.

A few blurbs from the Smugmug CEO, I spent a few years using smugmug but then moved to Zenfolio. The whole online hosting is going to be a difficult business with all the social media alternatives.

I don't think the two target the same audience. I doubt many pay SM annual fees to post iPhone selfies, and I suspect few professional/serious photographers use Facebook for sales/portfolio management. Charging hundreds/thousands for wedding photos and asking a couple to go to FB with ads/"timelines"/etc. popping up all around to see their prood wouldn't be very professional or conducive to word of mouth

SM has done very well over 15 years serving a niche with specific needs, and I suspect Flickr may target a niche one level below that. Whether it will be subscription or ad-based will be interesting.

But I'll repeat the above - don't break Smugmug.
